There is no real downside to you naturalizing, and quite a few benefits. You can still be proud to be British; naturalizing takes nothing away from you and opens many more options up.

Edensong, if I were you I would wait. Little backlogs like this have happened before, they get ironed out and processing goes back to normal. Keep an eye on it but don't call them unless you want to...

Mister Thingie's is coming due this year (and crap, so is mine!) and I'm wondering if lightning will strike us if we let the UK one lapse.

It's the out of country thing. I belive they do have that same option applying from inside the UK.

The Consulate's phone numbers and other contact information are all available on the web. Have you tried contacting your own Consulate? (the one that serves your residence)
