Re: Things you like about the US

Never mind the fact that we get **** all vacation time here anyway no matter where we want to go.

Sometimes it's hard not to just stick with a domestic vacation though. National Parks are dope.

Re: Things you like about the US

Right. If the appliances are part of the sale, the last thing you want to do when you move in is open the fridge and be greeted with a big pile of rotten meat or something

We only found...

Re: Things you like about the US

The last thing anyone would expect is that the CIA would have such a highly visible office. The culinary school is just a front, you were the only one to see through it.

Re: Things you like about the US

I was going to say, that would be a hell of a vantage point if you could see Langley from the Hudson

Re: Things you like about the US

While I like being in the middle of them in Chicago, I do agree they look better from a bit away, so you can see them in context. But again, I also enjoy a skyline that doesn't have skyscrapers as...

Re: Things you like about the US

Holy crap was that a fortuitous revelation or what? I could have thrown a million darts at a million boards and never hoped to hit that bullseye :D

It's what I imagine living inside a stream of urine might look like.

Re: Things you like about the US

If I misunderstood you, I stand corrected and offer my apologies, but you're also misunderstanding me. I never once said non-American cities weren't proper cities, I just happen to like that I live...

Re: Things you like about the US

One of these days I'd love to take a really long train journey here. Something like Chicago to LA, right through the southwest or something. I'd be glued to the window like a kid in a candy store...

Re: Things you like about the US

I guess when you consider just how bloody big the US actually is, things like this make sense. After all, rural counties make up 72% of the land area of the US.

Re: Things you like about the US

One can get the same effect round my way. I'm about 55 miles outside of Chicago, still reasonably urban, though noticeably suburban, in that while you're never more than 15 minutes away from a...

I almost like it better when you get things like that seemingly in the middle of nowhere.

Re: Things you like about the US

They called the famous Rwy. 13 approach into Kai Tak the 'checkerboard approach', because of a large red and white checkerboard mounted on a hill, used as a visual aid by pilots. When they saw this,...

Re: Things you like about the US

You got to experience the checkerboard approach in (presumably) a 747?

Now I'm jealous.

To be honest, it doesn't even have to be a fancy skyline to interest me. I just love infrastructure...

Re: Things you like about the US

I can top that, I went to California a couple of years ago and never made it to an In N' Out.

Oh well, now I suppose I have to go back there again. Oh no, whatever will I do ... ?

Indeed. Going back farther than the 12th century as well, of course, I just arbitrarily chose that one because of good old Carrick Castle :)

Re: Things you like about the US

Snobbery is not an attractive quality, so take issue all you want but you sort of lose credibility when you start claiming your definition of "real" somehow beats mine as if subjectivity is something...

It's generally the same (except the tolls are probably much higher). Illinois collects all the tolls and does who knows what with it but you can always tell when you pass into it from Wisconsin even...

Re: Things you like about the US

If there is no wind to speak of, even 10F doesn't feel too bad. In recent years we've had a week or so with below 0F wind chills and they suck, but if there's no wind, the cold is bearable here. ...

Re: Things you like about the US

The last time we were in California, before we made it (back) to San Francisco, my daughter was complaining that there 'wasn't enough air'. To be fair, it was 109 with higher than usual humidity...

Re: Things you like about the US

It varies from year to year. Sometimes you're right, you get two days in the 50s at the end of March and then it's 80 and every mosquito who has ever existed is in your back yard.

But other...
