Re: Let's talk about cars

Nah, the Herald and Saab were in Blacksburg, so a looong way west of Richmond.

Our next door neighbour had a Herald when I was around age 7-8, and even back then I thought it looked like a POC....

Re: Let's talk about cars

I was out and about in Virginia today and saw a couple of cars, each parked outside (on driveways) outside unremarkable houses in unremarkable parts of town (not even subdivs, just residential...

Cool, you're building a kit car!

I look forward to hearing about your progress.

Re: Let's talk about cars

Apparently nobody told the Chinese, or Snyder dba "Wildfire Motors", of Stubbenville, OH, that the primary purpose of the Reliant Robin was to be the butt of a joke.

Re: Let's talk about cars

The NY test I took in Herkimer lasted about 8 minutes driving around the old residential grid near the test office. It included several STOP signs, at least one set of traffic lights, .... and a...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yeah, I had to do that too. It was a PITA, and extremely dull. Most of my classmates apparently understood little or no English and spent the 5 hours chatting or napping.

Re: Let's talk about cars

That doesn't sound right - I am fairly certain that all US state licenses are interchangeable, with only a few formalities, such as a computer "written" test and rudimentary vision test.

However,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

I suspect that the willingness to swap licenses is generally a two-way deal, and that, IMO with good reason, the UK is unwilling to swap a US license for a UK one, and so US states won't (with only...

Re: Let's talk about cars

:scaredhair: .... What a thing to do!

I would have guessed a Chevy V8 as it's as popular to slap one of those in your project car in the US as it is to stick a Rover V8 in something in...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Some time, I think, in autumn 2019 our 2003 Accord's timing chain tensioner slipped, with the expected, ugly consequences. I parked it at the back of our drive while we worked out what to do with it....

Re: Let's talk about cars

From 2020 model year there has been a button (https://gmauthority.com/blog/2019/06/2020-gmc-acadia-can-finally-disable-engine-stop-start/) on the Acadia's dash to disable stop-start. :nod:Apparently,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Starter motors in stop-start vehicles are, like the batteries, also larger and more powerful than in a conventional vehicle. I find the stop-start feature intensely annoying, especially in "stop then...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yeah, I can imagine that new vehicles have more always-active circuits even without adding further parasitic devices that constantly draw power.

Re: Let's talk about cars

There are several variables, notably whether you choose a "remanufactured" engine, or one pulled out of a wrecked car. I had a bad experience with a remanufactured engine with the first swap, and did...

Re: Let's talk about cars

WTF?!?!?

After my old Accord spend the entire lockdown "resting" I finally got it towed to a Honda specialist for another motor swap. So at 360k miles it's now on its third motor, and it...

Re: Let's talk about cars

We bought one fairly recently, but have no experience yet of using it to start a car with a flat battery.

Steerpike I don't think you have a lot to worry about - I only use my Mustang occasionally...

Re: Let's talk about cars

The only time I have ever had anyone approach me and ask if they could take a picture of a car I own is when I lived in Westchester Co, NY back in early 2002 when Mrs P and I stopped at an ad hoc...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yet you started out a few posts above here ^ saying that the car in the TV show sounded different, and asked why.

If you're interested in something and spend a lot of around things...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Ok, well Porsches [1] have boxer engines, effectively a V engine flattened out to 180°, so half the pistons are on one side moving back and forth in a mirror image to the pistons on the other side of...

Re: Let's talk about cars

OK, well I couldn't find any clips on YouTube of the BMW as it appears in the TV show, but I did find this video of the sound of a BMW 8 series V12.

Re: Let's talk about cars

How does it sound to you? .... It is possible that the sound could be a pure fiction applied in post-production by the studio, but assuming it is the actual sound of the engine that you're hearing,...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Yeah, crazy, isn't it. That said, there's only a few of us here in the US who post regularly on this thread, so, honestly, cars are more of niche interest than us petrol/ gear heads would like...

Re: Let's talk about cars

Auto transmissions in small cars/ cars with small engines, have never worked well, and I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole. Smaller engines seem to do better with CVT transmissions (the...
