The UK has seriously deteriorated in some areas, it has probably some of the dirtiest parts of Europe, take a Barging Holiday on the Continent, then do the same in the U.K, the difference in cleanliness is hugely noticeable.

I visit the UK routinely, but have the means to stay in the nicer areas and to enjoy those parts that are yet unspoiled.

In Canada, we drink to socialise, in the UK far too many drink to get drunk.

Oh yes, I did attend several U.S Universities, post Grad, also attended 3 Canadian Universities.
And that makes you what....better than other people on this thread.....? oh please ............there are bad places everywhere in Europe and the world....have you ever been to some places in Malaysia (and I love Malaysia)....Spain...Greece....even Italy...all have "rough" areas.....its the way of the world.....and I don't drink to get drunk......I drink along with my friends and family and socialise....are you trying to tell me that Candians don't get drunk......well I will have to wonder what my cousins are doing over the next weekend when they are off to another "college house party" while parents are away..........................and are there no "rough" areas in Canada?...cor blimey we picked the wrong country to migrate to!!!!!!!!!!! lets all head to Canada...utopia..... to all Canadians out there...not knocking Canada.....it does sound a lovely place and my Canadian family are just lovely...normal...and well like everyone else...human

Since being in Australia I have found other things to be scared of......snakes, kids drowning in the sea(quite common, scarily enough!). Car breaking down in the middle of nowhere, and I guess like you in France( i have been often) you are always in the middle of nowhere if you opt for the rural life.

The things that scare you the most probably never happened to you while you were there and will probably never happen if you return. Its just letting your imagination run away with you. I'm scared of people calling me a failure, or that I will miss oz if we move back, but only time will tell, and the bottom line is you can always retire in france when your children have grown up!

There are many parts of England that are still very beautiful and fairly low crime rates. Trouble is, all we hear on the news is doom and gloom so thats what we expect.

Since coming to oz I have read and seen the film "the secret". I'm sure you have heard of it? Well anyway, I have realised that if I want to be happy here, I will. If I want it to work in the uk it will. If I don't it won't. Simple as that really. We just don't want it here anymore, so it wont work as we dont really have our hearts in it. We are currently planning to return in July, and wed have been here for 11 months. Long enough to fill a years diary, almost!!
A fabulous life experience, and a fantastic lesson.
xxxxx
besides I cant live without Indian takeout on a fri nite!!!! Or dark nights at xmas so you can admire everyones decorations! I love UK and proud to be English. Maybe we should all be more patriotic about our country instead of slagging it off, and use our votes, instead of thinking that it will never make a difference.
Good luck in whatever you decide, and be happy that youre only a couple of hours and an easyjet fare away!!!!xxxxxx
Ditto everything...good thread....

I agree, felt that terrorists had pushed me and family from England, not the youth culture, a lot of them are just bored kids whom have lazy parents that don't give them the time of day......now I think, whatever.....it's my homeland.....therefore it's my right to raise my family there, and besides I have learnt through living in a different country that there are always issues there too. I guess I was naive thinking that it would all be perfect here, but life really isn't like that....I realise what is in England is better the devil I know than the devil I don't!! ps when did you leave England? Are you planning on returning?

Hi we have been in Perth for nearly 10 years...we have really tried to make it home and I can see why for some people it is home...but for us it has never happend....there was only a few things we did not like about our time at home but in hindsight they were fairly small....every visit we have had back to the U.K we have been impressed (and people here and over in the U.K might not see it that way) but from when we left it has changed....lots of the inner citites have been re vamped, there is plenty of work (we left it was hard at the time as the country was in a bit of a "slump") our families have done very well both with their children and work....being here has not been all bad but it is not home...there are lots we miss....my sons miss their cousins (even after all this time) aunts, uncles and grandparents etc....in lots of ways they have missed out on many things that you have with extended family.....we miss travelling to Europe..my friends are off to Paris for a long weekend this weekend....and I miss things like that...my husband has said he has been "fed up" here really for years and it tells on you after a while....we have travelled here but lots of it seems the same...we have also been overseas whilst in Aus...and thats wonderful but very expensive....oh I could go on....but I think the main thing is that you have to be happy...no amount of good weather, larger homes etc can make you happy and we appreciate the little things more..ie walking to the local paper shop...saying hello to your neighbours on the way....having a "tea & toast" with my friends at Sainsburys or Tesco's....while doing a morning "shop".....nipping round to my sister in law (was married to my husbands brother) she is my very, very good friend and sorting out our problems and having a good old laugh while doing so......................................lots and lots of things......seem trivial in some ways but whatever makes you happy.
Do I regret coming out....a little..but it makes you appreciate just what you had and can have again................

Canada....Utopia.....not at all!! Don't get me wrong, where I live is nice but there are rough spots all over Red Deer. We've had drug-houses and grow-ops busted in the most desirable of areas!! And as for Howard referring to Canadians drinking "socially"....what a crock of sh*t! Drink driving is HUGE over here....try going along Lakeshore Drive in Sylvan Lake in the peak of summer - it's full of wild, pissed-up, puking, fighting Canadians. Canada is ok, but NOT Utopia....honestly Howard!

We are at one wonderful advantage being Expats for several years, aren't we? We get to see both countries for their good and bad points...and in the end, we develop a definite sense of knowledge and understanding of what we see and deal with day-to-day. After 5 years in Canada, I've put my rose tinted specs away now.....and the fight is on for the decision of our lives! UK or Canada?? Tomorrow I'm going to draft my "for and against" list...should've done it tonight but had a few drinkies and spent too much time lookin at soddin UK houses for sale/rent and quaint holiday cottages to rent!!........mmm, I've ventured off path of the thread here, but my initial point was that Howard is making out that this country is sooooo bloody amazingly perfect, but it just isn't. In the newspapers the other day, there are 4 teens up in court for killing a cat in a microwave and last year there were two d*ckhead lads an hours drive from Red Deer who beat, tortured and dragged to it's death behind a truck, his OWN family's black Lab! Not to mention the gang-related gun shootings that go on in Edmonton and Calgary. I too am of the mindset about the kids in the UK....most of them are just harmless, in a group hanging around with nothing to do. SOME of them are little b*stards and get up to no good (I should know, I had my fair share of them before I came to Canada)....but mostly they're just hanging out.

Ok, I'm off my soap-box now and off to bed.....zzzzzzzzz

there have been break ins here recently.....torquay and anglesea. Stupid attacks on local shops, stealing stock, money and smashing premises up. Unbelievable, both really lovely areas. I guess I was naive thinking it would all be so perfect!

There is definitely an alarming trend in this part of Canada, towards violent home invasions, not even targetting the really wealthy, just average people. One man has already been murdered in his own home, and several severely beaten. Things like that just don't seem to happen in the UK.

There were several murders over the last year that were very alarming. One guy looked at someone the wrong way and paid with his life in broad daylight, another was an elderly lady beaten to death for a few dollars. That is just a selction among all the gang shootings.

Canada is the sort of place where fraudsters who steal money get put in jail for 10 years, brutal murderers and rapists get sometimes little more than a slap on the wrist. The all time classic being recently, when an 18 year old girl got murdered at work in a petrol station. The getaway driver got off free because the judge thought he had "suffered enough" I think the actuall guy who stabbed her got 8 years.

Canada is way to soft on violent criminals

It is actually getting better over here with tough sentences, today 3 17 year olds who punched a man to death after an argument with anti-social crap got life with a minimum of 17 years.

In fact it's something very much in the news here.

An 18 year old has been found guilty of 8 violent rapes, one woman was left for dead. They are now fighting it out because he was only 17 when the crime was commited so the defence wants him sentenced as a minor, (max 2 years inc time already served). The prosecution wants him sentenced as an adult ie 14 years. Being Canada no prizes for which one he will get.

In the UK this guy may very well have got a life sentence, that is what he very much deserves.

He would, I think it has been the public outcry that has changed sentences, 4 guys got 37 years minimum each for the shooting of 2 girls in Birmingham last year, it has to be so.
