Just a comment about the selection of the first 60.
The Monday to Thursday candidates were offered a contract of some sort reguardless of degrees or merit etc.
It appears that on the Wednesday in Oz the opposition political party then questioned the decision to recruit UK officers. I do not think its a coincidence that 24hrs later no contracts were being offered.
I believe that the decision was based on political pressure to recruit from home. It follows that having got a full course of UK officers, a period of reflection should then take place (by Sapol), during this period attempts to recruit at home will take place. If this is unsuccessful they will come back to the pool who are now arranged in a list order ,according to skills required by Sapol.
I think the first 40 were first come first serve and the last lucky few were selected on an unknown criteria.
I have two colleagues selected and on the March course, one was interviewed on the Thursday, has no degree, no particular specialist skills but was able to go in March. The second was interviewed on the final day and was offered the March course a short time later by phone!
Both now have their tickets and BIG smiles.

Nice to see so many people staying positive, not sure about writing to politicians of any sort??

me and lee also feel stressed by this whole thing; lee would have accepted march if it wasnt for the fact that he was told at the fitness test by scott, and at the interview by brian the superintendant (i think) that there was a course starting may 28th. we didnt really want march for many practical reasons, but were worried that this would be our only chance. however as we all know we were told there would be at least one more course (may) and so lee duly accepted and was one of the few who has an offer letter with 'date to be confirmed' written over the top of 'march 21st course date'.

so we are disheartened but like so many have said, no one has actually said no. im having an pessimistic day, and can see the 'no thanks' email in my head, but practically a lot of info points to them needing more uk officers.

at the info day we spoke to brian (who, like i said earlier, interviewed lee) and we said, look we know you cant tell us, but what is your gut feeling on if there will be more courses. he said it was more likely that there will be more courses than not. he also said that sapol had been running a massive recruitment campaign for the last 12 months, and used many different media than they had ever done, including internet, on the sides of buses, on advertising hoardings, bus shelters and interstate. it was the most expensive campaign theyve done and i think he said it had cost about 1 million aussie dollars to date. so an upscaled recruit in sa did not only start when political pressure from the opposition state government started kicking up a stink over uk officers, but was ongoing anyway, and was not very successful, otherwise they wouldnt have looked into uk officers. he said about the unemployment level being low as well, which was having a knock on effect - being in the police is never a job anyone will do for the money, so common sense must dictate that only those who have a true vocation to join will actually join up - and there wont be very many of those who are in the job market, same as there arent here.

in relation to degrees and further education - aussie coppers dont have to have degrees, they need to have a year 12 certificate which is the same level of education as our a levels, ie the last year of secondary education - it is not a tertiary certificate and therefore not a degree level. sapol had to ask uk recruits to have three years experience of policing in order to show the immigration department that applicants for the rsms visa would be suitably qualified to apply for that category of visa and to satisfy sapol's normal requirement for year 12 educated officers.

if degree qualified people were 'headhunted' for the last few march places it may be due to the scary fact that 25% of sapol are between the ages of 50-60 - and maybe they were thinking that those with degrees may want to progress further/more quickly to fill up the places left in the upper ranks by those leaving at aged 60 in the next few years. this is not me saying that i think you have to have a degree to be an inspector or whatever their rank system is - just that they may have had something like that in mind and thought of the accelerated rank progression that SOME degree-qualified officers may want. dont shout at me if you get the wrong end of the stick - i think a good copper is a good one whether they have a degree or not!

all in all we are feeling rubbish about not knowing; some feel confident enough to have meds, start house sales etc, others dont, and its horses for courses. as for writing to politicians, its apersonal choice. i love writing snotty letters of complaints but i wont be doing that. for a start we havent been told 'no' yet (notice the 'yet'... told you i was having a negative day!) and anyway, if someone wrote to a politician there wouldnt be much point: if you wrote to a politician in the ruling state party they would obviously be on your side, as they supported SAPOL recruiting from uk in the first place, so you would have to write to the opposition party as they are the ones who seem to have put the spanner in the works. they are in opposition and thus couldnt do anything, even if they bizarrely wanted to (bizarre as they dont support us). yes we have been told conflicting info, but we were only TOLD this, nothing was writen down about the extra places. there has only ever been 60 confirmed places, in the only course that was ever promised. the only issue remaining may be about the selection of the march 60 and i for one am not about to slag any of them off. i may be jealous of them booking air tickets (!) but i would never say that they are only going cos they had their interview first - that may very well be true but that does not mean they should not have been offered the job; they passed all the tests like the rest of the successful candidates.

so i will await a 'no' before i start mentally writing any letter of complaint... and even then lee probably wouldnt let me actually write one!!

Hi,

Been feeling a little deflated to comment on here, especially as SAPOL haven't replied to my email I sent on Saturday. I guess they have loads to go through before they get to mine. I will give them til the end of the week before emailing again.

I agree with a lot that Zoe has said. We too were offered March and May, so turned down March......and what for.

I consoled myself the best way I know how today, and that was by shopping... especially as it is payday today. I bought a lovely Next suit, shoes and shirt (at the Next to Nothing Store) spending money I don't have, thinking, oh well I need a new suit for work. (Was hoping for No work in Oz until we were settled).

I know they haven't said No yet, but like Zoe feeling a little pessimistic, especially as SAPOL didn't even acknowledge that Rich has a contract when they sent out the email!

Went to work Sunday, and was best avoided!! The poor chef in canteen who didn't put mayo in my tuna sandwich!! I stormed out saying how could you have a tuna mayo sandwich with out the mayo!!??

So ok, my theory (which will be short as Eastenders has just started!) is that there are a lot of political and logistical things SAPOL have to over come. I think there are probably some more local interviews etc... to be carried out b4 they can say whether they need any more UK officers or not.

They will probably need to see how the course goes for the 60 and gauge some sort of reaction from public / press and politicians alike.

Watch this space, and if they turn round and say thanks but no thanks, things will become very interesting I am sure!!!

Zoe,

In Budweiser style, 'cause I don't like XXXX, .......True......

Everyone's entitled to their opinion. Here's mine. If you don't want to hear it, don't bother reading on...

"Stop whining" .....until they say "No thanks" you've not lost a penny, and they haven't said that yet. Zoe's got it right, and if I was an employer reading this, I wouldn't bother with the effort of having us. Nevertheless, if the ruling government want us, we'll go.

Since when do they ever, ever, listen to the opposition and go "Oh actually we were wrong, we won't do that." When do referees change their decisions in sport despite whinging....never. Get a grip, get on with your lives and until they say No, you are a successful applicant waiting for a course.

Dan. (Bring it on then !)

Dan, speaking of getting on with your lives.

Your at training school, any 'heads up' on the skippers exam in March.

Hi

Hope you are all well this morning. Just looking for the update on SAPOL website whilst at work, typed SAPOL in to google and this site comes up 3rd.

In otherwords it is very very easy for ANYONE to gain access to everything that is written here. My suggestion is to use the Police Forum website, which requires registration before you can even view it. Especially as people are starting to get a little heated - self included!

By the way - where is this updated section re British Recruits on the SAPOL site? Can anyone send me the URL. I have tried finding it, but it looks exactly as it has done over the past few months. I have even tried deleting my cookies etc.

Thanks Ann

Coral, I agree. It is very early days and they never promised any further courses. Congrats to the 60 who are going and good luck. We are all frustrated with the lack of information but as has been stated many times. The SA Pol staff also have access to this site and even told some applicants about it. If they are reading this site they will be well aware of how frustrated we all are. However, we have to remember that they may not have any information to give anyway.

For me, I've done the medicals, sorted out the export permit for the moggies, given my parents power of attorney to sell my house if I can't before I go (hopefully go that is). I am currently doing up the house utilising all of Brian's handy tips!!!. I shall keep on with the fitness, remaining up beat and keeping my fingers crossed. Be positive all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

My attempt at a joke to keep you all chilled:-

Young nurse approaches a patient who has drips on his arms and an oxygen mask over his face.
He says to her "Are my testicles black?"
Nonplussed she says "I'm only here to wash you hands, face and feet".
Again he asks "Are my testicles black? Are they ok?"
The nurse very hestitantly lifts up the blankets looks at his testicles then places them in her hand and has a feel then says "They look ok and they feel ok".
The man removes his oxygen mask, smiles and says "That was very nice but are my test results back?"

Chins up, keep smiling y'all!

Yes i have thought about writing to someone as most people probably have, and no-doubt i would be speaking for the majority, but it wouldnt by my place to put that. H and I are just sitting tight waiting for that email, that will come in time, its only early days. I didnt get a date from the Met for a while, they need to sort things through. Let them deal with the 60 that are going over very shortly and then they will concerntrate on us.

Hi Kimbers,

Just one comment....we were promised another course when Rich had his interview...otherwise we would NEVER have turned March down. I know that has all changed now....but hindsight is a wonderful thing.
Good joke by the way!!

Yes Rich did get that call, and so he then said to put him down for March as there are still places left. Unfortunately (for us) this message didn't get throught to the correct people, and we were not offered March and remain in the pool.

Rich
I was offered the March course in interview. Told by Brian and Supt within two days of each other that they expected corses in May, July and sept but dates not conformed. Brian did suggest 30th May, which would have been 12 weeks after the March one. No, I never got a phone call and No I wasn't offered March even if some dropped out. That is all history now though. I am still confident that they need recruits and that it will be in their interests to sort it. Bad publicity will do their cause no good at all especially if they are going to recruit next year. Don't forget this was a trial for all OZ forces, they can't afford to get it wrong. They wont.

My gut feeling is that there may be a course in June/July but because of all this confounded running my guts not that big anymore.

Smartie and jellybean go out for a drink. Jellybean is worried that they might get attacked when they go to the Sweetie Bar, a notorious night spot. Smartie says "Don't worry bean, I have a hard shell I will protect you". Jelly bean feels more confident and they enter the bar.
After 10 minutes 3 locketts come over to the two and start pushing them around. Smartie runs away and jellybean is kicked black and blue. He eventually crawls from the bar and sees Smartie hiding across the street.
"Why didn't you protect me you said you had a hard shell"

Smartie replies " I couldn' they were MENTHOL" get it (mental)

Chin up peeps, besides it might stop snowing soon and just turn to slush!!!
