It was a bit of a shock when I first started work out here as certain things were very different to what I was used to, but things have and are still changing and you quickly get used to how things work.
We found that my wage is pretty similar to what I was on in the UK and so when you take into account the lower cost of living over here we had more money. When we first came over I was the only one working and we managed to pay rent and build a house at the same time with me working 30hours a week (admittedly it was night duty).
You will hear people moan about poor staffing, but the ward I work on has 8 or 9 on an Early, 8 on a late and 4 at night. These are nearly all RN's too. We usually have a truckload of students too so sometimes there can be 13 or 14 people on an Early.

Hello again,
I work at Fremantle on a surgical ward that specialises in vascular and upper GI. It can be ridiculously busy at times but it makes the time pass quicker.
As far as wages go I can only tell you the rates for nights, I get a 20% loading for Mon-Fri then its 50% for Sat and 75% for a Sunday. With the latest pay award Sunday night is the best night to work as you get paid the whole night at Sunday penalty rates.
I salary package as well which makes a difference of about a $100 or so (in my favour).

Re: Which Nurses are going to Perth?
Hi, can anybody offer some info on salary (basic rates) for Perth, as i have heard they are lower than that of East Coast? has anybody got the rates they can post?, My partner is a D Grade (Band 5 now) on £19k basic, around £22k with enhancements i guess, this works out at about $48k aus, is that about the right rate for a nurse qualified for 2-3 yrs?
thanks Tony
PS, sorry i should have started a new thread, but thought it easier to gatecrash this one. PPS, yes were looking at Perth end of next yr, all depends on reccie in April, and cost of living research and house prices. Any advice on how nurses cope financially? cheers
thanks Tony
