It was a bit of a shock when I first started work out here as certain things were very different to what I was used to, but things have and are still changing and you quickly get used to how things work.

We found that my wage is pretty similar to what I was on in the UK and so when you take into account the lower cost of living over here we had more money. When we first came over I was the only one working and we managed to pay rent and build a house at the same time with me working 30hours a week (admittedly it was night duty).

You will hear people moan about poor staffing, but the ward I work on has 8 or 9 on an Early, 8 on a late and 4 at night. These are nearly all RN's too. We usually have a truckload of students too so sometimes there can be 13 or 14 people on an Early.

As far as wages go I can only tell you the rates for nights, I get a 20% loading for Mon-Fri then its 50% for Sat and 75% for a Sunday. With the latest pay award Sunday night is the best night to work as you get paid the whole night at Sunday penalty rates.

I salary package as well which makes a difference of about a $100 or so (in my favour).
