It is proof of a high level of literacy in English. Not all native speakers are literate ! Many read "The Sun" and nothing more ! Others could not even read that ! Of course for UCLES/Univ of Cambridge it is a big moneyspinner. A scam really - and I say that as a former IELTS Examiner.

This is what happens when you forget to proof read on a phone... Pretty sure autocorrect lives to confuse my posts! Note to self... Use the computer where it only underlines when it isn't happy, ha ha

Scouse Mummy is an unknown quantity at this point
Default Re: IELTS Test

Got my results today and passed!!! Just checked and got 8.5 overall and the required 7 or above in all 4 categories. I feel excited and nervous as it's getting real now!! Next stop converting my UK nursing registration over to New Zealand. One step at a time and hopefully will get the job and visa.

Let's not talk about the "English" spoken in NZ for now. However, I read "quality" UK newspapers on line, and watch the BBC now and again, and have to say that grammatically, the English that is used today leaves a lot to be desired and is often embarrasingly bad. Having said that, who cares anyway, as long as you are understood by others?

Well done !!!

Also remember that New Zealand nurses who want to register and work in the UK also have to sit the same English language test. Strangely those from nurses from the EU for whom English is not their first language don't. Go figure !!

There are native speakers of English who would have problems with a literacy test. IELTS of course is big business and is a real moneyspinner for Uni of Cambridge and the Australian provider - whose name I forget.
