British Invasion

Re: British Invasion
You will find yourself going into a battle of wits with an unarmed man and/or woman on more than one occasion. You just lose the will to live in the end.
Either they look at you blankly or you laugh at something and they weren't being ironic.
BTW I'm from Woking, where about in Surrey are you ?

I was surprised to find that dog groomers are on the skills shortage list?

Some might say bullying those with less limbs than the average person was cruel but I see it as just a bit of 'armless fun.

Re: British Invasion
I'm not happy with the direction the UK is taking. I think Europe as a whole is taking a sharp step to the right and there is a rise in anti-immigration and anti-ethnic minority feeling that I find incredibly uncomfortable. I will freely admit to being happier down here where it's a lot less toxic and stressed than Europe appears to be from a distance.
I had no great dreams of fleeing when I moved here. I viewed it as an adventure, a chance to see a part of the world I'd never get chance to if I didn't. Do I regret doing that? No not one single bit of it. NZ is increasingly my home and I feel happy here.
I am saddened and upset by the anti emigration/immigration brigade's backlash against those of us who live here from both the Brits back home and the Kiwis who don't seem to realise that we are not here to take from them but like all immigrants are looking to give and participate.
At the end of the day if you move here from the UK to escape the UK you likely won't find it as easy to settle than if you moved here to move here. People do actually move to NZ for NZ itself and that is a valid choice and should be understood and respected.

Re: British Invasion
Immigration is now increasingly used to drive down wages, so not surprising people are unhappy.

Re: British Invasion
Is there a minimum wage law in NZ? We have one in the UK, thanks to the EU, but horrid profiteers are increasingly taking advantage of vulnerable immigrants, paying them considerably less then charging them for a mattress in a house with way too many residents so they can never afford to go home but end up as modern day slaves instead. It's a big problem where my Dad lives.

Re: British Invasion
There are Kiwis with the skills who are unemployed but not prepared to work at that wage level?

Re: British Invasion
A firm has to prove that it has tried to recruit locally first. It may be that no one local applied because of the low wage, and sometimes immigration pick this up and reject the application to bring in immigrants. E.g Truck drivers use to be on the skills list. When immigration took it off haulage company owners complained that they couldn't find drivers locally. The real reason was that they paid so little that people went off and did something else, e.g labouring. One company said it never had a problem recruiting drivers because it paid $10 ph more than anyone else - not surprisingly they had low turnover as well.
