Lightbulb Dubai Recruitment Agencies List/M. E. Lifestyle, etc

Bob:Ok, I deleted all the rubbish, just got the links of agencies and the like, I think, and it's stuck to the top as I think it's useful, and it's a boring day, and also, closed the thread, but if there are any other links that are useful that I've missed, let me know and I'll add them, as this could be very handy for people.

Disclaimer: I'm not endorsing any of these companies, nothing beats doing your own research, but these were provided by members of the site as a starting point, no guarantee that they are up to date and current, but shall try to maintain them.

Oh, advice, to be blunt, to be taken seriously for anywork, especially the recruitment agencies, you have to be in the country to meet the people otherwise you have little chance of being taken seriously or really being considered.

Things to look out for, having to pay signing on fees in advance, or anything you wouldn't expect to do at home, just be wary, as they often get a commission from the company that they place you with, so it would be odd for you to pay first, and if there getting paid first, it would indicate that they might not care for your after service.

Agencies that have been pointed out to be wary of, but by no means have necessary done anything wrong are:

At the back end of last year my landlord told me he wanted to nearly double my rent from 67,000 to 120,000 pa if i wanted to stay another year (2007-2008). If i didnt accept then he was giving me three months notice to leave the villa by February.

I went to the rent committe, had a chat and was advised to bring a case against him.

That case was heard today and what a result, not only did they not accept his flimsy excuse of needing the house for his own use but as per the new law my rent has not been increased and i have agreed to a years notice period. I will also get my rent committee fee deducted from the rent.
I was offered the house indefinately with any increases in line with any laws in 2008 and onwards but knowing my landlord and wanting shot of him i didnt push this option.

In a nutshell I will be paying the same rent as last year because i paid a 15% increase last year and the law states that he cannot now ask for an increase this year, i have a years notice and the absolute winner.......if he doesnt move into the house himself between 2008 and 2009 and i find out he has rented to someone else, I am automatically entitled to compensation. (the landlord nearly choked at that bit)

From speaking to the committee and other tennants who won, the law now stands as this.

If you paid any increase in 2006 then you do NOT have to pay any increase in 2007. If you didnt then the maximum increase is 7%.

The only reasons you can be forced out even if they say its for personal use are if you have not paid rent on time, if your neighbours have complained about you to the police or if you have damaged the property.

Even if you lose the case you must be given a fair period to move out, the rent committe by their own admission say that should be at least a year if not two!!!

If the rent committee finds out that the grounds your landlord claimed on are false then you are entitled to compensation. ie they say they want to move in but instead put it back on the market.

It costs 3.5% of your annual rent to bring a case but if you win then this is deducted from your rental payments

They are really serious about clamping down an rouge landlords this time and every single tennant i spoke to had won their case hands down.
If you do bring a case, then always be polite to everyone in the municipality building (several people who were on reception when i lodged my case turned out to be committee members!!!), be reasonable when your in the hearing they want to arbitrate reasonable settelements within the law, clearly explain your case and refer to notes and any correspondence you have. DO NOT throw an expat strop, i watched a couple of people do this and frankly it went down like a lead balloon, at one point my landlord tried and was told if he didnt like the law he was free to leave the country and go home.

Rent Committee Chairman Ahmed Sheikh 04 2063813
Secretary 04 206 3088 (mostly a woman called Magda)
Lawyer (Zanab?) 04 2063917

Default Life Style etc

Lifestyle/Culture: places to go, see, shop, chill out, do's and don't etc

Museums and other places to visit;
  • Iraian Souk in Bur Dubai is interesting followed by an abrah ride across the creek and a stroll along the dhow port - polished off with a trip to the gold market.
  • Spice souk in Deira as well as trips to Shindagha to visit the site where Dubai was 'born'
  • A visit to the camel racing at Nad Al Shabe is well worth it + the camel market afterwards to buy a few blankets for the missus.
  • Dubai Museum is excellent and well worth a visit.
  • In Ramadan, The Tents are really gr8 esp the ones in Ramada Int con and Ritz carlton.
  • Check out the Al Boom Tourist Village.
  • Heritage Village in Hatta. They start at 5pm and the setting in the mountains is just beautiful -Cultural experiences

Kids stuff and the like;
  • The kids farm is a no no.
  • Wild Wadi is a must.
  • Sharjah wildlife park - good place for the kids and the natural history museum next door is excellent. The wild life park is fully air conditioned!!

Places to eat, club;
  • Dhow for Dinner or Drinks.
  • Going to Shindaga Heritage Village and sit near the Creek for tea/shisha/Dinner.
  • Desert Safari and Dinner Cruise on a dhow is also a must
  • Best place to have coffee:The Lime Tree Cafe in Jumeirah 1. Their snacks are brilliant!!!!
  • A thread on places to drink is here, so can't be bothered with listing them all here
  • Noshi Noshi at La Plage (Thai) - Complex that looks like Melrose Place, on the corner of the beach road and al athar street (the street that leads upto Lloyds TSB). Have been there and the food, the ambiance and the service is top notch. Highly recommended as a quiet Jumeirah nook.
  • Blue Elephant -Thai Food
  • Verre (Gordon Ramsey's) is defo the best restaurant - not the setting, which is a bit average, but the food and service is amazing. I (Madam Medusa) think it's better than his restaurants in London... and worth the long hike for sure.
  • Rib Room in Emirates Towers is fab too
  • Napa in Al Qasr now it's been changed, very similar to the Rib Room
  • Vu at the Emirates Towers, great view of the city and found it had more atmosphere than Verre, however the food at Verre is fantastic.
  • Pier Chic is also really good and has a very romantic setting, especially if you have a table on the deck..
  • Indian- Ashiana (Sheraton)
  • Pure Veg - Govindas (try the lunch/thali on Friday) - excellent value for money.
Stuff I'm not sure about, but of interest;
  • The World Cup horse race is well worth an evening out - (Nad Al Shaba Again) a mate of mine won the bentley there three years ago.
  • Theres a catamaran that sails out of Mina Sayee every Friday at 3pm - 125 AED per person. free booze, a wee snack and use of the water sports facilities. Jet skis, banana/donut rides etcetera. afterwards you get a free drink at the hotel's barasti bar - returning at about 1930 - its an excellent afternoon out - a good idea for a load of us to go on!!
  • Get a Desert Buggy and get wild on the dunes.
  • If you like ur photography then a trip up to Fjueirah (spelt wrong) is a must as well... intersting mountains and so forth on the way...
  • The drive from Masaafi to Dibba is even better and then round the coats from Dibba to Fuj - theres a good off road run across the top there too
  • Trip to Hatta to see the 'alien' trees and a pit stop for a bit of sand skiiing or dune bashing is always a gr8 thrill.
  • www.mydsf.com - check out l the cultural activities.

Places of Interest in Salalah (Infro by CasaNova):
From Dubai it will be 6+8 hour drive.

Nabi Ayoub’s Tomb
Situated 40 kms from Salalah, this mosque and tomb-shrine marks the place where the remains of the Prophet, possibly identified as Job in the Old Testament, can be found.

Ain Razat
The source of several natural springs, Ain Razat is a place of great beauty and a popular spot for picnics.

Ain Homran
Located 22 kms beyond Ain Razat, this scenic location of natural springs is enclosed by a garden. It is also popular as an excellent spot for bird watching.

Shisr – the lost city of Ubar
Excavation is still underway at, what is believed to be, the site of the ‘mythical lost city of Ubar’ of the ‘Arabian Nights’. Make sure to visit the small museum that displays the various archaeological discoveries.

Taqah
From Salalah, follow the coast for 30 kms to arrive at Taqah, the area's third largest town. The town boasts of an interesting fort and several great photographic spots.

Tawi Atayr – Well of Birds
A quiet village overlooking steep hills, Tawi Atayr has the region's largest sinkhole. The presence of numerous singing birds creates a symphony, which is as unique as the place.

Wadi Darbat
A natural park with majestic views of waterfalls, lakes, mountains, caves, wild life and lush green vegetation. Make sure to visit the 100-metre monsoon waterfall.

Khawr Rawri
37kms from Salalah, Khawr Rawri beach is a natural beauty spot for visitors. Many migratory birds including flamingos, waders and gulls frequent this lagoon.

Mirbat
66km east of Salalah, Mirbat, is famous for its picturesque bays and caves and people with unmatched skills in composing and playing music. Mirbat Fort is another attraction for visitors.

Mughsayl
Located 40km west of Salalah, this magnificent sandy beach is outlined by sculptured cliffs and blowholes formed in limestone rocks. The view along the coast where the mountains meet the sea is truely spectacular.

Rakhyut
Through an impressive climb via eight hairpin bends to the crest of mountains, Rakhyut is a spectacular spot to visit. At the top, a thoughtfully built parking place is provided to admire the splendid views.

Sumhurum
Situated beside the Khawr Rawri beach, Sumhurum is a picturesque fresh water creek. It was probably the citadel of the ancient city of Moscha. In its ruins now, the city dates back to 100 BC.

So not much good if you're looking for a new job or got one in the works, will still be banned from working for six months....but it's something I guess...

Setting Up a Business (Cheers Shiva) -

Setting up here is a real pain in the ass. It can be done but it will take a bit of time and more paperwork than you would believe.
Yes there are dedicated areas for certain industries and different licence types, you will also need a local partner if you set up outside a free zone.

see here to start with:

Ministry of Labour
http://www.mol.gov.ae/pages-EN/docum...Guide-en.htm#e

Ministry of interior

Also if you want to employ anyone, then you need to sponsor their residency, which entails deposits etc to the government, also if you are paying market rate for cheap labour then you would also have to supply housing, so bear that in mind when calculating costs.

Degree Certification
A solicitor must sign and stamp a copy of the degree to make an authentic copy.

This and the original are taken to the legalisation dep't of the Foreign and commonwealth office in the Old Admiralty building on the Mall (2 mins from trafalgar square) Its a ticket queuing system, very fast in the mornings and the actual legalisation of a document takes around 15 minutes and costs 12 pounds.

You can do this by post:

http://www.fco.gov.uk/servlet/Front...d=1007029391458

You then take the original and copy to the UAE consulate (Not embassy - its a different building) This is opposite the Natural history museum, etcetera. It costs around 10 again and is done overnight or if you take a stamped addressed envelope they'll post it on.

Info from Smartd, so cheers:

I would suggest your best bet is not only to look at working for the operators directly but usually by consultants such as Detecon or vendors like Ericsson or Siemens both with offices in Dubai Internet City

If its UAE your after then etisalat usually points you to www.etisalat-careers.ae and thats a good start for any openings in UAE (usually abu dhabi or sometimes if you are lucky in Dubai) and also they are recruiting there for Etihad Etisalat the new operation in Saudi.

As far as cisco is concerned you can usually get work if you are certified CCNA, CCNP and such and even try your luck at their offices in Dubai Internet City as well.

Default Re: FAQ -Salaries

Examples of salaries and packages:

Accountantpostions are relatively low paying.
eg: Financial Controller, who is also a Chartered Accountant (Indian), works 6 days a week 10-15 hours a day, and is paid 5000 DHS per month, no benefits.

Just what is a good salary? - Live comfortably, be able to particpate in sports, go out + save $ and pay the mortgage back home, AND come back with some cash (hopefully)

To give you an idea, how does 25000 dhs/mo + housing (to 75000dhs pa) + car + airfares sound for a senior manager type position?

Responses:
  • Housing needs to be a little more i would say, esp if you have kids, + you will need school fees, plus all depends on what type of company it is, industry wise that is.
  • Depends on where home is, how big your mortgage is back there, how often you want to eat out, where you want to live, what sort of car are they going to give you, how often will they pay your airfare, how many children you have etc etc. The 25,000 Dhs bit looks about right but the housing allowance will only get you a one or two bedroom flat in the better areas, and you have to allow for electricity and water on top.
  • Not particularly good - housing is way too low if u have kids u want to look at 80K-100K+ for a decent place
60K a year upwards will get u a home in dubai
Municipality tax 5% of rent. Elec and water bill in the summer can be horendous if in a villa.
    Schools range from 10 - 48k a year
    Think of pension payments!!!
What about moving out here costs
Medical cover / insurance is a must
ps...... 60K a year upwards will get u a home in dubai.... doesnt really need to be as high as that.... perhaps with kids, u need a bigger place, so 80K a year should suffice.

Tourists to Dubai: dress code
secretdubai guide to dressing for Dubai

Basically the dress code is very liberal, and if you are staying in a holiday-type hotel (as opposed to a business one) then beachwear is fine. Restaurants often have dress codes in terms of men wearing long trousers and not sandals - though women can get away with whatever - but no different to the west really.

You'll probably find that you don't walk about much in the open because it's so damn hot!

I highly recommend taking a light wrap/scarf: it will be useful for shade in the sun, and when you go inside it will be ideal for the often chillly air conditioning. My arms and shoulders often get freezing. Also, if you then do have to go to an official office type place for any reason or speak to an official - you can cover your shoulders and feel more "proper". I think locals probably do afford more respect and concern for slightly more covered up women.

That said you're unlikely to come into contact with locals much, as they barely work in the hospitality sector.

There are often complaints about westerners in "skimpy clothes" outside mosques - the problem is that Jumeirah mosque is directly opposite Jumeirah public beach and a strip of touristy boutiques. But you're unlikeley to go to that beach if you're staying at a beach hotel. If you're not, I recommend Jumeirah Beach Park - it's a few dirhams to get in, but it is nicely landscaped, there is a cafe, and you won't get labourer-types gawping at you.

I would also avoid really skimpy stuff in malls (eg midriff showing stuff or micro skirts) though to be honest it's now at the level where people will just think: "another tourist" etc.

You'll get stares whatever you wear - that's the burden of being female here - but you shouldn't get actual harassment. If you do, shout at them to go away and don't be scared to find a hotel manager/supervisor/policeman/store manager etc to report it to.

Topless bathing isn't ok, though I've heard it's happening more and more - it is still illegal though, and hotel staff will ask you to cover up. (You can undo your bikini strap while you're lying on your front to avoid strapmarks etc, and push the shoulder straps down when you're on your back. Just keep nipples under cover!!)

For Wild Wadi waterpark, which you should definitely visit, you might be more comfortable in a swimming costume, as water and wave pressure tends to pull bikini bottoms down rather. Definitely avoid thong bikinis there (and on the public beaches too).

In terms of the heat take loose, cotton clothes as much as possible, strappy sundresses, though a/c is everywhere so nightclubs and bars don't get too stuffy. White cotton literally acts as armour under the sun. It is also hot at NIGHT - 30c and humid - so bear this in mind. You may get a bit sweaty in tight, lycra-y stuff, at least getting in and out of taxis etc.

Abu Dhabi is more conservative and while it's liberal law-wise, I tend to be more self-conscious if I wear skimpyish clothes there. Sharjah is a total bloody nightmare - it's illegal NOT to cover there. Sharjah is somewhat of a hole: however it does have quite a nice souvenir souq (the "Blue Souq", I think) and there is also an excellent wildlife park if you like animals. Men and women have to cover at least to the knee and the elbow there.
