I don't know one from another but I assume you've seen this in the guardian today?

Re: Phones Again
Get a Motorola moto G if you want a good budget smart phone I don't know what generation they're on now but the reviews are usually good.

I hadn't actually looked. And that's their definition of not breaking the bank. I'd forgotten what 'budget' means at the Guardian.
Like those basic commuting bikes for women a couple of weeks ago that were mostly between £1000 and £2500.

Re: Phones Again
I got the new Google Pixel a few weeks ago. Everything a Nexus was, and more.
Nice bit of kit.

I'm with the others in saying that the Moto G line of phones is good. They are Android phones, and Moto's version of Android is very, very close to stock - isn't loaded with bloatware.
Are you wanting to stay with Bell, or willing to change to a new carrier?
If you are going to stay with Bell, then maybe post the phones you can get on your budget and we can advise based on the options.
If you are willing to switch carriers, check out what phones Koodo offers, you can often get some great deals on higher-end phones with great discounts.
I currently have the LG G5, and I paid $360 plus tax for it. ($0 up front, $15/month for 24 months)... that phone retails for about $700 or so.
You can get a refurb Koodo Moto G for a whole $168 - https://www.koodomobile.com/phones/m...fied-pre-owned
Or the Moto Z Play for $360 (same deal as I got, $0 up front and $15 for 24 months) - https://www.koodomobile.com/phones/moto-z-play
Or you can get an older generation iPhone for $360 but with a $150 free gift (which is usually either accessories and/or visa/MC gift cards) - https://www.koodomobile.com/phones/iphone-5s-16-gb
Those are all cheaper options that would serve your needs as you laid them out in the OP no problem.

Don't get HTC! Their Nexus 9 tablet was the biggest electronics con I've ever bought in my life. Needed several defects refitted just after the 12 month warranty ended. $288 :-(.
I've used Samsung Galaxy phones the last few years and they are actually very good. The latest model fully charges in pretty much an hour and holds charge for 36 hours with your type of usage.
Otherwise given your animosity to Samsung I'd go with the iPhone. I don't know though if that goes against your principles as a programmer/IT Guy?
It is good to see you finally getting rid of the Blackberry. I wouldn't expect you of all people (yes ALL PEOPLE) to be trying to cling on to a crumbling Canadian relic out of sentimentality.

It's not sentimentality, I've had it since it was new and exciting and just hate the palaver of bringing lists and whatnot forward. I'm with Bell because, twenty years ago they were the only ones to support international calls; the carrier doesn't matter now but I can't change the number.

Yes I'm glad someone agrees with me over the Moto G. I had a 1st gen, now a 3rd gen. I don't need a new one but would like to get a 4th gen. Not much bloatware.
