Goodbye Stephen H., or more arrogance?

Re: Goodbye Stephen H., or more arrogance?
Unelected? Remember 14th October? I remember it all too well. Voters voted for the MP from their riding. Governments and prime ministers follow on from that.
And as for the separatist issue, that's not going to be an issue for the next 18 months. That was part of the deal. (A), the Bloc is more than reasonable on most topics, where it's perfectly possible to make a deal with the NDP and Liberals; and (B), separatism hasn't exactly been anywhere near the headlines. Given there's a provincial election in Quebec, the fact that separatism/independence is low on the agenda is telling. 'Making a deal with the devil' is hardly the language you use to win over wavering Bloc voters.

Incidentally, I don't think the Bloc will want to touch the Tories with a bargepole, after the arts cuts and especially after the Tories called their cause diabolical. And I think the feeling is mutual.

Like all weasels, they will rip each others politically motivated, self serving unelected throats out...however the real casualty will be the Canadian people/economy!

I think you have too much faith in governments. A confused and directionless coalition is less likely to do anything much than a strong government and so is less likely to do any harm. We're better off with chaos in Parliament.

As for Dion as a back door PM......seems the country that rejected him wholesale may well be saddled with him yet. So much for the electorate choosing their goverment. A sad precedent (in recent history) it will be if it happens....

Anarchy... and every one for him/herself? There's an all-too-similar thread in the main Canada forum so I already vented spleen there about these temporarily-united three musketeers. How long before they're at each others' throats? And Dion as PM? Doit-on rire ou pleurer?

I think a shrug, gallic if you prefer, is the appropriate response. Dion as PM backed by a coalition isn't likely to start a war, introduce an abortion law, radically change the tax structure. He's not likely to do anything very much and, for that, we can be thankful.

At least here in Canada your City and Provincial Governments have far more say in your day to day life than the Federal Government.
Italy has managed to survive and prosper with poor coalition governments for years. Maybe Canadian wine will improve.

Perhaps not, however Dion would be held to ransome so to speak at every turn by his two co-conspiritors, who one way or another will try to spend their way into the hearts of their respective supporters...and all Canadians will bear the cost, which will be to our long term detriment! In otherwords, a (unelected) selfserving, economical shambles. Thats quite a lot, opposed to " he's not likely to do anything very much"
