Would someone know what the rules are for a UK national applying for residency in Gozo? Any simple advice for a simple person would be greatly appreciated.

It depends on whether or not you'll be working whilst in Gozo, or if you're self sufficient / self employed. Bottom line is as an EU citizen (i'm assuming here you are a UK or other EU citizen) you have the freedom of movement in Malta. So you're entitled to residency. All you need to do is apply for the eResidence card, and you're good.
