So many books to read---not enough time!
Some time ago I started a thread hoping to discuss -Indian literature/ music /dance etc.
Just a couple of relevant posts made, then only recommendations of British authors writing about the Raj.
At least Dalrymple lives part of the time in India.

I did not see the thread but recently posted on Saadat Hasan Manto

Dalrymple is unusual in that he refers to Indian sources and reads Urdu. For his books on 19th century Indi he has used the archives in New Delhi, including vast amounts of material in Indian languages. He also writes sympathetically of the little-documented cases of Europeans who fought on the side of the insurgents in 1857.
Dalrymple is a high-caste Scot, having ben educated at Ampleforth and Trinity, but I salute him as a scholar and great writer !
