Default Citizenship for us all ?

I arrived in Canada approximately 8 months before my wife and children (both now over 18) arrived.

In the next few months I would have been here the allocated time to allow me to apply for my citizenship.

If I started the process and was granted the Citizenship would my family also need to go through it all in 8-9 months or are they granted automatically as I would already have it (or be in process).

Just wondering if it's worth me applying or waiting until the family are ready and apply all at once.

Your family can't apply until they've actually got the required amount of days, it's not linked to your application at all.

So you can apply now if eligible, but they won't be able to until they've accrued the requisite amount of time as PR's in Canada.

You may as well apply now though rather than waiting for them, as from what you've said they'll be subject to the new rules re: citizenship time, so wouldn't be eligible for quite a bit longer.

HTH, good luck.

Thanks. I've just worked it out that taking into consideration the few times I've been out of Canada that I can only apply on 14 January next year (thought I was sooner than that )

When are the new rules coming into affect you mention ?

Nobody knows, I've not really been keeping up with it but I think it's passed the first stage but isn't actually law yet. You might be caught by them, but hopefully it'll be after Jan for you.

Good luck.

They haven't announced the date for it yet, should be at some point next year though as the law has already passed through parliament, but hasn't been properly enacted yet. When it does, it will be a requirement of 4 years of residency in a 6 year period, as opposed to the current 3 years in 4... so it will be a bit of a delay! So you might as well get yours off while you still can.
