Default Holes in garden

Hi All,
I have some sort of burrowing animal in my garden.Well him and all his relatives.
Holes every where and ground very spongy to walk on.Not moles,i have them as well(ain't nature great!)These burrow through the ground just under the surface, they dont push the ground the earth up like moles.Thought it was the ground burrowing frogs that come out at night, because i saw one walking through a tunnel that had broken the surface one day.
any ideas or similar exp?

CC

There are that many cats here i dont want to add to the problem, and all they seem to do is use it as a toilet and not hunt.
some of the holes are around 50mm/2" in diameter, pretty big mouse, other holes are around30mm.
This year a neighbour cut my grass and in places it was a nightmare because of the mower sinking into the ground.Normal push pull type of mower, not sit on type.
Plus, there are that many patches of soft earth,i think every mouse in the village has moved here.
Reminds me of a Jasper Carrot sketch years ago when he had problems with moles. "wheres the dynamite?
