Default Asbestos roof

Hi there,

We are buying a farmhouse near Evron, Mayenne, (we've still got a couple of days cooling off )
it's got two barns with newish asbestos roofs, we want to replace them with slate or tiles, & try to get planning for couple of gites -
does anyone know the approx. cost per sq. mtr. ?
or if we take them down the cost of removal ?
or can we give it to local farmer ?
- any info. would be helpful (just learning to speak French !)
regards Les

Hi Les

Asbestos :scared: do not even attempt to remove it yourself. You wont even find the local tip will accept it for disposal.

I had similar prob with a small outbuilding, I was only told that (even white asbestos) has to be dealt with by a specialist company. ...... after a year i got a quote.........€€€€€€€€€'s, so mask on, and i buried it under the driveway.

Thanks for that. It has brought us to the decision not to go ahead with the purchase of a property we had in mind. It has masses of asbestos roofing.
Still. Onwards and upwards. Seems that there are loads more to choose from.

Removing asbestos in any form is an extremely specialised job. Don't touch it yourself :scared: . Its not even work for a jobbing builder. :scared: Its not just the actual removal , its the clean up process of the surrounding areas afterwards.

Mechanics, donkeys years ago, used to be told to blow out remains of brake linings to remove any residual dust. Often wonder if any have had chest problems.

Could, but it's unlikely. As I understand it, the vast majority of asbestosis cases are people who worked with it for most of their lives and were regularly exposed to the fibers.

Heck, I remember playing with chunks of asbestos tile as a kid, and so far I'm still here 30 years later.

Still wouldn't buy a place that needed asbestos ripped out though.

I used to be a pipefitter on the gasworks contracts in the UK about 40 years ago and remember the laggers mixing up asbestos fibre with water and slapping it on the pipes as lagging, no one said anything about the dangers of it.
If it is a new roof, where did they get it from cos you cant buy it now, maybe it is the new immitation asbestos sheeting, which is safe.
