Default Anyone in Dominican Republic?

We will be retiring soon, and are looking at all our options. Having been to the DR before, are there any retired expats living there already, or anyone like us, thinking about it as a location to move to?

We understand that our pension will not increase, as they don't have an agreement with the UK.

Is it a safe country to live in? Our travel agent when we came once, told us not to hire a car as we'd become a target!??? We would want to hire a car to find our dream area, and buy one when we arrived.

Any advice or answers to my questions above greatly appreciated.
