Presents
Hi, my mum is coming over for a visit and brining presents for us. Does she need to declare them? Is there a limit? I vaguely seem to remember something about $60. Is it the value of all presents or each present? Thank you.

Re: Presents
Gifts cant include booze or smokes.
Some will allow more but thats down to the discretion of the officer.

Thank you so much for the quick reply.
One more question - she's bought some wooden toys for my baby - are those OK to bring in?

Re: Presents
I dont think wooden toys would be an issue. However, if you are unsure check Customs website on whats is allowed to be brought in - it is usually just food-stuff (meat, fish, honey, etc.).

worse case scenario, declare them. Noone is going to punish anyone for inadvertently trying to bring something in that isn't allowed. It'll just get taken away.
Fines and stuff are for people trying to smuggle things , IE not declaring them,.

Actually there is an issue if the wood is raw. It must be finished with a sealer, varathane, lacquer or whatever.

Untreated wood can be a problem. As Zoe says above, if in doubt declare.

Agree with other posters, declare everything. I know many people who have been over the limit with presents, have declared them and the customs officer has said "happy xmas, welcome to Canada" - cannot count on that, of course.

Re: Presents
however I would've thought with being a toy, it would've been treated / processed when it was made??
anyways as everyone has said, declare it if in doubt.

Thanks everyone. Where would she declare it? There's a question about being over the limit, but she's not, so where would she write that she has wooden toys?

Re: Presents
The customs declaration card she will be issued on the flight will have that question on it, along with all the other usual "have you got more than $10000 on you" questions etc.
