We stayed for 6 months in the Skyrattler area, off 111 street/23rd Avenue. Pretty decent area, handy for the local train, shopping and close to the Anthony Henday.

If you are looking for a short-term place, you will likely have little choice but downtown service apartment-type of places. Some larger rental companies do rent for 6 months.
If you have kids, I would suggest North Glenora, McQueen or Woodcroft as there are lot's of parks and rental options (homes, condos or apartment). They are also centrally located and have great public transportation.
Greenfield is also a nice area if you want to be on the south side.
By the way, Canada is a bit different than other countries. Kijiji is used much more than Craigslist so I would check that site first for rental options.

AS it will only be for 3 months, you may want to look at short term furnished suites.
