Depends on income levels probably

HBC gave me a four hundred dollar limit, quite amusing

I got a PC MasterCard unsecured with $1000 limit and shortly after got an RBC visa with $2000 limit again unsecured. It's totally feasible to get credit cards here and once you have one try using it for everyday purchases and then pay the full balance to build up your credit history.

Feasible, but not a certainty, and unlikely to initially be at credit levels an immigrant was used to in their home country.

Well that's true $2000 credit limit compared to £10,000 back in the UK. But then I built a good credit record over many years in the UK so I suppose it just takes time

One option for those in this situation might be to open an account at a credit union. Since one becomes a member upon opening an account they might be more inclined to issue credit cards.

How times have changed. When we first arrived we had no problem getting credit cards from RBC with quite acceptable limits and no deposits required. I did get turned down for interest free purchase on a TV at A & B Sound though, so I put it on the RBC credit card.

RBC still is probably the best bet for new immigrants.

Certainly have - I got interest fee leases and loans on agricultural equipment soon after arriving, with terms beyond the length of my TWP, and a commercial mortgage before any residency status. I didn't bother applying for a credit card until I'd been here several years.

Credit Unions in my experience have tougher requirements then banks do, heck without credit one may not even get a basic chequing account at one without good credit or sufficient credit history.

Ps I tried Carandian Tire MasterCard with C$200 limit (what a joke!!)
Some banks give you a normal credit card as part of their immigration accounts or newcomer accounts, I got one no questions asked - they didn;t even care if I had ajob.
