But that's just for heating water. For heating your house with water you need a pump, so that is susceptible to power outages unless you have a back-up generator.
Air heating needs a fan. Mind you that's just a few hundred watts. A decent inverter could knock that out off a running car, enabling you to top up your heating once a day in the event of outage.

I should have patented that idea though...

I don't believe there is such a beast as a gas hot water heater with an electric ignition. I'm pretty sure they all use piezoelectric, no mains required.
