Thats weird. In '75 the drinking age was still 18 here in ON I thought. They only raised it to 19 in 1979 iirc.

You're right, it is weird. That just made me look it up and it does indeed say 18, but 19 from 79.

By the way...what are you doing recalling 1979?

I also saw that Quebec is 18, so that may explain why Montreal was okay.

Its one of the things I remember from Gr. 10 history prohibition and all that.

Yeah Que is 18... At least it isn't 21.

I believe that's Aberdeen. You're thinking of the Granite Brewery at Eglinton & Mt. Pleasant.

That was also shockingly long ago.

Off-topic but I now have an excellent pub in the same building in which I live when in Newcastle.

They now have alcohol in Loblaws courtesy of the Beer Store. It's still the mass produced stuff.

I'm not too concerned on a personal level as I try to avoid drinking alone in the house so tend not to stock much.

Oh I don't know, I perused the beer fridges at loblaws and looked like one fridge of craft & import and one of chill-swill.

Assuming you don't have overly luxurious proclivities or expensive habits, then yes $125K will do nicely in Toronto. You won't be rich, but you'll be well-off.

On another note, it seems that alcohol is really really important to many people here!

I'm like JamesM, I almost never drink at home so I haven't scrutinized the selection at the LCBO to any great degree.

Family of four such as the OP a single wage earner with a take home pay of $7k/mth, paying for a rented house with all the added costs, as well as all the other expenses, may find it a tight squeeze... just saying

On the drinking - I suppose even a moderate to frequent amount alcohol consumption at the local bar whatever would need take fair chunk of a persons salary? Lets say minimum $20 (tax & tip included) 15 days a month - this would buy a lot more from the LCBO/Beer store. Of course less social aspect or watching ball games at the bar

I think going to a bar 15 DAYS a month (i.e. every other day) would constitute fairly heavy drinking, at least for Canada. For me it's more like 1-2 days a week, less in the winter when I hibernate and turn anti-social.

But then this is British expats. Ie people who left the UK with the intention of drinking more.
