Are we being unrealistic??

Re: Are we being unrealistic??
There are often comments on here that $50,000 isn't enough, that $100,000 isn't enough, and so on, and so on. One post even suggested that £42,000 equaled an Australian wage of $150,000. Rubbish. To some on here Australia is always going to be "expensive" and they'll never earn enough money to live the life they want. Ignore them. Simple as.
My wife and I set up here and spent probably about £10,000 and that was with us getting some nice stuff too. It can be done. Whether the other big spenders on here couldn't bear the thought of spending so little...that's their problem. Budget well, do your research and you'll be fine.

I agree, it can be done. I earn much less here than I did in the UK - through choice. Life is simple but very pleasant.

I have spoken to a few agencies and I am of the opinion that unlike the UK, the starting wage is just the start, you are paid more in Australia the longer you work, my uncle in law is a nurse practitioner in Queensland and he earns $160,000.00 a year, in the UK that wage is unheard cos nurses are not valued
The salary you quote for your UIL is pretty rare here and I would not use that as an example of nursing salaries in your calculations.
....and I have worked as a fairly senior nurse in Queensland.....and in the UK
PS...I also wouldn't believe a word that a nursing agency tells you....I have had plenty of dealings with them.

I know plenty of nurses in the UK earning more than that.....it is certainly not unheard of.

I know I won't be earning that but I know that that I'll be basic low level salary for a good few years before I specialise and then I can earn more but you're never in nursing for money, well I'm not, I'm in nursing cos I love it, I love the people I meet and I love making a difference, however small.
Grayling, I know what you mean about nursing agencies as well, I've had lots of porkie's from one of them!! It is two years away at least though so by then hopefully I'll find a reputable one.
Thank you 77hil, it's true, if you're used to a certain amount of money then even £20 more a week is a fortune, it is what you're used to.
Keep on saying thank you but I do mean it, loads of replies with a lot of information

Re: Are we being unrealistic??
I, myself, charged £100 per hour working privately and I know many who are doing that full time......it has nothing to do with exchange rates
There are differences between the systems so comparisons are difficult but many nurse practitioners here will be being paid medcare rates so are effectively working privately
Not all nurses are working on wards.....the differences between 'ordinary' nurses here and in the UK are not great. I know a few who are working over 80 hours a week simply to make ends meet

Back to the original question
You asked if you were being unrealistic. I think you will struggle as many others have said.
It seems you have cherry picked the answers to find the ones you want to hear.....if you did not want realistic answers then why ask the question?
No one is lying to you if they give you an answer you don't want....but it is your life.

I think the whole point is you live within your means. If spending $1200 on entertainment is your thing then so be it.
With a little bit on work I'm sure that the prices you mentioned could easily be reduced. I just done a quick check on high speed wireless internet and it averages $40 not $90 and I'm sure that the mobile price could also be reduced.
Each to there own.

Do you live in Australia? If you don't you are going to be in for one hell of a shock when you arrive.
