Sunday trading in Perth

Re: Sunday trading in Perth
I would prefer it if we had Sunday trading in Perth but it's not the end of the world that we don't. Businesses should be allowed to trade when they like. If they don't want to trade then that's their issue but people should have a choice. Government should keep their involvment to a minimum. Rather than Sunday trading I would like to see shops opening later in the week. One day of closing at 9pm is not enough. Shops closing at 5-6pm is ridiculous if you work. Closing at 7-8pm would be better.

It’s not that everyone is eager to spend their Sundays in shops, but Sunday shopping does make life easier and gives you more options of when you can/are able to shop.
Working Monday to Friday, Saturday’s become a real race for everyone to get all their shopping done if the shops aren’t open on the Sunday. Roads are busier, queues are longer, and you end up spending more time getting your shopping done.
Sunday shopping spreads the load and gives you more time to chill.

Very often, Sunday afternoon is a very convenient time to head to the shops and get some groceries, or any other kind of shopping.
In actual fact, it's a very good time to go shopping, as all the families are out at the beach, so the shops arn't full of screaming children...

I agree. This smacks of the whole family centric middle Australia thinking again. Not all of us have families, and many single and childless couples have very active work and social lives during the week and on saturdays.

what amazes me is that people need the shops to be closed to enforce family time?? We each make our own choices about what we do with our free time. If the shops are open no-one forces you to go to them you chose it for yourself. Does no-one have any willpower left to refrain from the shops on a sunday, if they are open I must go........... We didn't need the shops closed on a sunday in the UK or in WA to ensure we spent family time together, we just didn't go! As a working mum I would prefer the shops to be open longer hours so that we have more choices about when to get our shopping done. As it is shopping does impact on our family time due to the very limited opening hours for working parents. I suppose its all a matter of opinion. rant over!
It's just more of the ultimate nanny state that Australia has become.

The other arguement that Sunday trading is bad for shopworkers does not wash either. Plenty of people find it convenient to work on weekends as it fits in wih their lifestyle. People like students or housewives for instance. Shopworkers get paid more on Sunday as well and because we have virtually no unemployment here, this will not be taken away unless a shopowner wants to trade with no staff!

WA is a democracy.
We were recently asked to vote on whether we wanted Sunday trading.
We voted no.
End of discussion.
