@1.508......will be interesting to see if it floors through 1.5 !

"Sterling is lower on speculation that the BoE will lower its economic growth forecasts.
The GBP extended its declines even after data showed that UK retail sales and house prices both rose in April.
Bets on higher borrowing costs have now been reduced to the lowest levels of the year, with investors currently pricing in only a 0.25% increase in the BoE's benchmark rate by 2012."

It will now, I just bought some more pounds. Seemed too good a rate not to.

Surely the UK is going to start putting up rates soon? They are storing up a whole world of hurt for themselves if they don't.

We're all going back to the UK for a holiday in June and July.....this low GBP to AUD is fantastic for us.

Not so good for my MIL who's money is in the UK, but has her visa for Oz.

Interest rates go up, house prices plummet even faster, mortgage rates go up, people can't pay, people evicted, banks get saddled with depreciating assets, banks go bust again and MP's BTL empires crumble.

To put it simply, they CAN'T put them up, the consqequences would be too much.

Looking like 2013 before we'll see a rate hike in the UK, maybe longer. Expect a Japan like multi decade period of stagflation.

So now's a good time to head North then? I recon I've got a good chance for the first time in over a decade of being able to afford to buy a decent house in the UK on the back of the sale of my Brisbane house.

Now - where does one go to find jobs in the UK these days?

What you have to do is take your UK wage, multiple that by 2.2, then multiple that by the current exchange rate to get what you need to earn here in Oz to have a comparable standard of living.

So lets say 40k UKP x 2.2 = 88000 x exchange rate of 1.51 = $132,880

See how easy that was?

You do, of course have to keep adjusting that 2.2 number, according to the current real exchange rate, to make these calculations work
my calculation of relative purchasing parity power indicates 1.35376599 rather than 2.2

Just find the money to buy a house and stay here - just rent it out. You'd be onto a winner within the next decade or so.

Funny.... I'm struggling to find enough money to hold on to the house I bought 10 years ago - buying another is definately not on the cards

That's probably like saying the US Civil War was about slavery.

I suspect that the real reason is that the majority shareholder has recently become British.
