I also find the weakness of the Great British quid a constant niggling source of depression. In fact I actually cited it at the acupuncturist when he asked me why I wanted treatment for my blocked liver chi.

If it helps at all bond yields factor in an interest rate rise to 3% by the end of 2012. That will mean sterling's value rises considerably if it's priced correctly.

Inflation (actually PPI) figures I think.

Interest rate rises coming (maybe).

  • Inflation in the UK coming in at double the BOEs target rate.
  • No interest rate hike now expected in the UK until their Autumn (almost 6 months later than previously expected.

Still, as the article surmises, it is hard to see it getting much worse than where it is now. Although the continuous decline over the last few years (GBP Vs AUD) is largely warranted and not unexpected, I honestly don't see it dropping much past 1.50 for very long (if indeed it ever gets to that magic figure)

And the "independent" BoE's mandate is to keep inflation down yet they are keeping interest rates artificially low. It's all going to end in tears.

Spot on. Inflation at well over 4% and rising with interest rates at 0.5%.

Something's got to give.

S&P threatened to downgrade the US "AAA' rating
but I think it will unwind back closer to parity when the US starts tightening its belt

I agree. The people I feel most sorry for are the pensioners who have limited room to adapt and pull themselves out of the mess

The problem is, that's a bit like waiting for the crack addict to wake up one morning and go cold turkey. In logical reasoning sounds ok, practically impossible in reality.
