There appears to be a big thing (certainly in Brisbane area) regarding a mass production of boutique/craft real ale bars these days also but the charges they want people to pay for some of these drinks is quite ridiculous imho but where needs must West End of Brisbane is particularly good for these bars and extremely laid back compared to any where else in the city i believe
Found Newtown to be ok last time i was there but must confess not been to Pyrmont other than Pyrmont Bridge Hotel and of course The Star so that's definitely a new area for me to discover thanks Maybe we might take a stroll around that area this weekend Gotta say i do like the Surrey hills area right up from Central station towards Sfs and of course Crown Street and area is always good for a beer or 2 , there's some nice bars there without the lunatic fringe and i'm sure that for every dozen bars i have found there be 2 dozen more i haven't but not quite sure why everyone goes off about The Beresford really ! Any how thanks for the tip on Pyrmont it will be put to good use
Ps we're staying it The X this weekend and i totally agree with you that it was a really good night out in the past but been disappointed with it lately and would rather head to Paddington / Surrey Hills myself these days
I had a good night out in the Valley from what I recall (or don't recall ). It was a biggen.

I recall the days when Oxford Street was the place to go in Sydney. How times change.

Strangely, I don't mind a night out in Double Bay. The Sheaf is good and there's a number of bars in a backstreet (name escapes me) opposite the Oak. But I'm getting old now so it might just be my age showing.

I find Paddo is no longer what it used to be for late opening stuff. Pubs are still good though.

News.com.au article on why people don't wanna move to Brisbane.

Queensland population growth slows: Victoria now Australia’s growth rate hotspot

Can't say I feel sorry for the Broncos as whenever my team's not playing I usually support the underdogs, but what's Cleveland like btw? Is it worth a day trip from the Gold Coast?

Clevelands ok but much the same as any other burn really! A couple of nice spots for lunch at Raby Bay marina or Cleveland Point but nothing different as to what you already have I would guess. There's an English fish shop and Indian curry house nearby at Birkdale if you feel the need and we do have the ferry service which runs to North Stradbroke Island which a lot of people like to visit for the day.

Managed to get along to the Dunkirk and it's mate over the road after being to Randwick on Saturday and prior to visiting The Casino. Not a great deal of people in Dunkirk but it's mate was certainly filling up as we left for Casino.I dolike the lack of bouncers on the door after a long sesh mind you Also had a very nice Indians just along the road in Harris Street

Since i've been waiting on my Vetassess coming back i've been doing a lot of studying and whenever i mention i'm planning to move people say "the cost of living is so high". Is that a myth because the things that my dad has shown me (he's already over in OZ) has proven this to be comparable with Britain.

Also, my daughter will be 7 and just finishing primary 4, will that be a good age for integrating her school work?

Just note that a lot of people erroneously ignore wages when comparing cost of living.

So when the aussie dollar was really high it seemed high to people who only compare using exchange rates. It won't seem as high now to those people as the exchange rate has dived.

In truth for us living and earning dollars here the exchange rate going up and down against the pound hasn't made a substantial difference to our cost of living. This demonstrates what a flawed way it is to compare. Most of the headlines were also from studies that ignored wages. Useless.

That's what I thought too, having looked at certain things like petrol (cheaper in Oz), meat seems to be cheaper too from what I've been shown, even electrics seem cheaper. I just don't want to have a false sense of what things are going to cost.

Yes, and dearer might be clothes, books, tinned food, out of season fruit and second hand vehicles to name some that come to hand...when people take average wages into account they often seem to report it is swings and roundabouts.
