Most well connected suburb of Melbourne

Docklands, Parkville, Carlton, South Melbourne ....... but not on that budget. The area immediately surrounding the CBD is do-able without a car; indeed I know people who live there and don't have a car - walk, tram, train all close by.

Never ceases to amaze me how you can park in Melbourne, even close to the CBD (or St Kilda Rd - sort of Australia's 2nd business CBD) and not pay.
Some hidden little gems.

We often park in Alexandria Avenue, just on the Richmond side of Swan Street bridge for $3 for half a day. We can go to the Botanic Gardens, wander along the river to Southgate etc, etc (but not when we go to the tennis or MCG or AAMI Park as the spaces are snapped up quickly!) As you say there is some free parking too for the savvy.

AAMI park for us again tonight for the Rugby, free parking on Alexandra Avenue but the BackDoor Boys are playing at Rod Laver so parking will be at a premium - always found something though!

Yep, I've been to full house Heart/City vs Victory games at AAMI Park and managed to find free parking of > 2 hours up the hill from Alexandria Avenue and drive around a bit. Key is to get there early and not expect to park and walk in close to kick off.
