If neither of you has a secure job offer in Aus, now is probably not the best time to come. Emigrating, starting again, is stressful & expensive at the best of times but if you add in the stress of job hunting in unfamiliar territory, with no contacts, Aus refs or experience......validate your visa & wait & see is my advice at the mo!

The local rags job section has dried up and companys who were advertising for staff on illuminated billboards outside their factories have stopped this practice just lately. This is in the mining industry in Mackay, North Qld. Hope this helps. Good luck.

Been working with a 55 year old australian painter today, his 1st day in work for 10 weeks, and he has more local contacts than i can shake a stick at.

Good advice - am trying to convince my other half to stay put [in very high paid jobs] until our visa runs out in Feb'2011 or both of us lose our jobs, whichever is earlier.

No brainer as far as I'm concerned really - in Oz we are guaranteed to have no jobs (age - he is 44, zilch 'Aussie' experience, economy...blah) in the forseeable future.

Can I just ask, for those who think it would be madness to give up secure jobs in the UK to live in Oz, what about if there was a job waiting in Oz, with the same salary as the job in UK?

Would would you still hang on in the UK or would you go? Just curious.

Is that job guaranteed & safe? Do you have the offer in writing? Is it just you that will be working or is there another half who will be job hunting?

We moved last November & I am a nurse so had a solid job offer. My OH however, is still job hunting & it is very hard on him. Fortunately we are able to manage on my salary although only just! At the moment, we have no regrets but that may change if his employment status does not!

Perhaps he is having some difficulty in accepting the horrible truth of the current job market in Aus

Perhaps. Did I tell you that after your karma I got offered a job? You have the magic touch, Sally. So...After 38 days, almost 100 applications and 13 interviews I am finally almost employed again. Of course, being government there is an appeal period of at least 10 working days, so I can't start until the second week of April. I did manage to pull in one day of typing for a geriatrics specialist last week, though.

Now we're worried about the old man's job. He's trying to find things to do to look busy for the bosses. He said no lay-offs yet, but who knows.
