You can claim for anything you want to, in your tax return, and get the rebates.

BUT... when it gets checked, and if it is rejected, you may be liable for interest and penalties, along with the original tax.

Claiming for exams is a very odd one. Were you told that it is an allowable deduction ?

I've been claiming for courses and exams for the past 4 years. for my foreign study I was told by my accountant last year that it was allowable as it was work related and would improve my career prospects .

I nearly had another trip back home in April but my flight was cancelled at the last minute due to the vocanic ash cloud. The Univercity emailed the exam to a venue here in Perth and I sat it 20 minutes from my house instead of 24 hours travelling.

I would advise getting a private ruling from the tax office for that one.

The mention of "would improve my career prospects" must only apply to your existing job, and not for a different employment.
