Chevron Australia Gorgon Project
Hi Everyone,
I have just been reading an old thread form 2009 about this project and I wondered if anyone had any recent news that they would like to share ie job offers, rates of pay for operators, production specialists, shift patterns etc
Thanks

Have a look at Woodside's Pluto project as this is going into production.

This huge project is still ramp-up phase and production is not expected until late 2014, so the kind of jobs you are looking for won't happen for a few more years. Most new LNG projects in WA and Qld are years off.

I was curious about this as they have recently had a recruitment drive for those positions and I had heard that the Prod. spcialists etc would start in January 2011 based in Perth and then transfer to flyin fly out a couple of years down the road. However, I know heaps of experienced guys who have applied and have not heard of anyone getting an interview so it sounds like you are right. It seems strange that they advertised positions so soon though.

Re: Chevron Australia Gorgon Project
My company is currently building the construction village. This project started in February of this year so I expect it will be a while before the work starts. I don't know when the project is due for completion but I'll have a look tomorrow and see if I can find out
There's some public info here if it helps: http://thiess.com.au/Projects/GorgonLNGPlant/index.htm

Only Houston or Aberdeen experienced design engineers are getting work on this project at the moment.

Now, I've been on a few construction jobs before, but never seen such a farcical job as this one. When the project manager tells you he has no money left 6 months before our small part is due to be finished then there's something wrong. Getting equipment to Barrow Island is a huge logistical nightmare at the moment. We waited 5 month for bottles of acetylene recently.
12 months in and Chevron must realise they have made a huge cock-up in deciding to build on a nature reserve as opposed to the mainland. Sure there is no Native Land Claim, and allegedly they see it as a model for allowing oil/gas development in Antartica, and dozens of other weird theories as to why its happening here.
Thiess would like to have 300 rooms in the temporary camp they are building ready by Christmas. Thats 300 out of 3000, after 10 months. That might happen, but there's not enough potable water, unless it's barged over from mainland.
Gorgon is currently a money pit for Chevron and their partners, way over budget, way behind time, requiring huge changes to make it happen. And that's before a single piece of steel has been put in place on the permanent LNG facilities.
Production operator jobs on Gorgon are at least 3-4 years away at best guess.

Re: Chevron Australia Gorgon Project
I interviewed for a main contractor on the Gorgon project last week and am waiting to hear as to whether I am likely to be taken to the next stage/offer.
I guess they are pre-emptying the resources required for the contract and I am hoping for a new year start

Canadian dude in my street works for Chevron on the Gorgon project. Just moved in, nice guy. Paid $1.5 mil for his house. He's doing OK. Reckons the LNG projects will keep WA afloat for generations.

Thanks very much for all the info guys, it seems pretty clear that any production work is a long way off.

I've definitely noticed a lot of American and Canadian accents around town recently.
