Car....to ship or not to ship
Hi all
I am getting a real mixed response about taking our car to Oz.
I am being told that second hand cars are extremely pricey, but on the other hand I am being told that european cars are really pricey on parts, so unless I have a japanese car, then leave it behind.
My car is a peugeot 307 and is a 03 model, so not particularly new or valuable, approx £2500.
Any advice would be appreciated

Re: Car....to ship or not to ship
I think that it's just personal preference really. I think a ball-park figure of shipping etc is about £5k? I've had a look on some Oz second-hand car websites and they are really expensive for what they are! For example, a 2002 Vauxhall Corsa (or a Holden something or other as they call it!) would be about £2k ish here, but is about £6k ish over there (with the current exchange rate). I also read that you have to expect that all Oz cars have high mileage as everything is so far apart. Depending on what car you want, you might end up paying more for an older Oz car that it would have cost to ship your own. You might have to do a little research and see what you can get for your money and weigh up your options. HTH.

Have a look at tradingpost.com.au or online local papers for used car prices.
[Peugeot 307 around $ 10,000 or Holden Vectra $ 6000 in NSW]
Also check with Australian Customs regarding import duty. Consider the cleaning costs for AQIS as well.
I really doubt it is cost-effective to ship an 03 car from UK to Aus.

I won't bore you with my experience but I wish I'd brought mine with me now. It was only 2 years old though. Regretably, I don't think that an 03 model worth that much is worth it. There are plenty of Peugeot dealers here though and Peugeots here are considered luxury cars Not in terms of value of tax but as an import I guess.
Is yours a diesel? If so, look at Hyundai i30 when you get here. Makes my 406 look silly price wise. They are just beginning to appear on the 2nd hand market.

Unless its a BMW, Merc, Audi or something prestige then I wouldn't bother, Having said that Peugeot are seen as prestige here...

Re: Car....to ship or not to ship
I shipped my smart car over and am well glad I did. Cost me £2500-3000 in all. Was quite a bit of hassle but worth it in the end.
