Default Buying guinea pigs

My son wants a guinea pig. Should I buy from the shops or is it safe to get one from the Free Pets section of the Quokka classifieds?

Buy them ??

When ours start popping them out, we take them to the local pet shop, and get $5 each for them.

The shop then sells them for $15 ish ?

We would be happy to give them away free half the time, and do so to our friends.

I would look for free ones, they will be just as good, if not better than those kept in a shop for a while.

Cheapest I've found them in the shops are for $35. I thought it cheap until I discovered the Quokka paper. If I get the free ones is there anything I need to look out for like skin rashes or sicknesses?

I'm not sure we can really tell, but if it seems lively, it should be reasonably OK, if it dies, then the child learns to handle death.

Give the free ones a chance, see how it goes.

I think that $35 is expensive.
