Default Buying a Pick n Pay In Cape Town - thoughts

Hello good people, I am a british born man who has been living in the United States for over 10 years and is married to a South African woman. We are planning on moving to Cape Town and wanted to buy a Pick n Pay supermarket from the owner who is retiring. Any thoughts on if this is a good idea, especially in Cape Town?

Good morning - welcome to BE.

It's a good idea if you have one in a good area, with high traffic and affluent customers. Some are not to be touched - lots of robberies and shoot-outs as they try and steal the cash when it is being collected. Let us know where it is and a Capetonian will give you their view on the area.

thanks for the reply!
This is still preliminary at the moment but the threat of robberies is a major factor which will need to be taken into account. I have to sign a confidentiality agreement with a broker before they will divulge more information so at present I don't know where its located. Will let people on this forum know and will appreciate their feedback.

No worries, make sure your confidentiality agreement is reciprocal - often they aren't which can leave you exposed.

Let us know when you know. Both Martynk and I work in security, so can give you some pointers.

Sure. Have a look here: http://www.crimestatssa.com/. The site is much easier to use than the SAPS one, and you can search using various criteria. Just make sure you identify the correct police precinct, they don't correspond with the municipal areas. Let us know if you want any advice.

what area is the Pick N Pay?
We use to shop at Pick N pay Constantia Village. It was a little gold mine.

Gold mine? So there were violent strikes every year?

Welcome back KB - thought you'd died of boredom over there...

Yea I stick my head in here every now and again. Need to add some diversity to the forum. Boredom in NZ? yea right. Too many liberal socialists here to keep me very entertained.
