The Riverland, South Australia

The Riverland is known for year-round sunshine and mild winters, perfect for vines and citrus trees - and great for golfers, too. It’s just under two hours heading north from Adelaide to Blanchetown, gateway to South Australia’s Riverland.

For 300km from where the river crosses the border from Victoria, the wide river transforms the mallee woodland landscape. The crucial ingredient is water. Lakes, wetlands and lagoons teem with birdlife. Three of the best places for birdwatchers are the Murray River National Park, Chowilla Game Reserve and Birds Australia Gluepot Reserve, with its prolific birdlife and 14 walking trails. Banrock Station Wine and Wetland Centre at Kingston on Murray merges the best of nature and nurture with its vineyards, strikingly contemporary visitor reception building and carefully restored wetlands. Tackle the 8km Boardwalk Trail or stroll the 2.5km Mallee/Valley.
