Murray Bridge, South Australia
Murray Bridge is the region’s hub and a centre for active water sports: waterskiing, swimming, knee-boarding, jetskiing and kayaking. Fishing, of course: the best catch is Murray cod and scallop, and in the warmer months, yabbies.
Murray Bridge and historic Mannum, further upstream, are home ports for many different river craft, especially houseboats for charter. Houseboating is a River Murray tradition, and no special licence is needed. Budget to luxury class, it makes for an affordable and laid-back holiday with family and friends. Or you can take a short cruise aboard the paddlewheelers PS Murray Princess and Proud Mary. Be sure to wander around Mannum Dock Museum, home to the wonderfully restored PS Marion, now more than a century old. The floating dry dock was built in 1876 by a famous riverboat skipper, Captain William Randell.
