It takes about 3 hours to drive to Maryborough, past the Glasshouse Mountains, the Sunshine Coast and Gympie. A small rural-support town of historic significance, Maryborough has a population of less than 30,000 residents; many of whom are seniors.

Located inland along a muddy-brown river, the township is surrounded by gently undulating farms. In summer, it's common for spectacular thunderstorms to sweep through the area, while at other times of year; vegetation can be tinder-dry.
