Transferring UK Pension Funds
If you are intending to remain in Australia permanently you should consider whether to transfer any UK pension funds that you hold over to Australian Super funds.
UK regulations limit your choice of Super funds to Qualifying Recognised Overseas Pension Schemes (QROPS). These are readily available and some will assist you in transfering the funds at no cost (although usually will not give you free advice on whether to initiate the transfer).
The tax implications of this decision can be significant, so it may be worth doing some in depth research or taking professional advice.
If you decide to transfer your fund(s) some Australian tax breaks are only available for 6 months from becoming resident for taxation purposes, so it is worth starting the process early.
