Working in the UK

This is on behalf of my US citizen friend, any help would be most grateful.

This person wishes to come to the UK to work and as a complete novice, was wondering how she goes about doing this? Could she travel to the UK, and then find work or would a visa be needed before travelling, if so, what kind? She only wishes to stay in the country for 6 months before returning to the US but needs work to fund her time in the UK. Any helpful advice, web addresses, just anything would be most helpful.

Many thanks

Michael

It's not that easy for a US citizen to work in the UK (same goes in reverse). There may be a scheme run by BUNAC or something that might help.

Working as a tourist is a no-no.

I thought that was going to be the answer.

What is BUNAC?

BUNAC's overseas work/travel programmes offer students and young people alternative to package tourism. On a BUNAC programme, you have the chance to live and breathe another culture from the inside rather than simply passing through as a tourist... BUNAC currently offers US students and young people work/travel programs to Britain...

hope this helps!

For the full list of options, your friend should go online and look that UK's Home Office website. This government department has numerous pages on working and living in the UK.

She cannot enter on a UK Visa Waiver and work. The VW is for tourist purposes only. If she wants to work, she'll need some sort of work permit.

Please look at the Home Office website for further information.
