Journalism in the US of A (NYC)

Hey there.

Something of a long shot but I don't suppose anybody reading this happens to be extremely well connected in the New York newspaper field? If so, I don't suppose that in turn they happen to be amateur philanthropists and would like to point this recent NY arrival in the direction of a fantastic job?

I have a master's in newspaper journalism and would love to hear of any other general advice beyond the obvious.

Cheers.

What kind of work in the newspaper field are you searching for? How much work experience do you have? A Master's in any field is probably not going to get you far unless you have some work experience to back it up.

Have you created yourself an American resume?

Where have you searched so far for employment?

Well you could try Reuters (a British company) in Times Sq or Bloomberg if you are able to do financial reporting (although they obviously cover world news, politics, sports, health stories etc).

The New York Post is owned by Rupert Murdoch and already has British reporters.

Let me expand, on top of my masters I have six months work experience at a regional daily paper back home and clips from my time there.

Yes, I have drawn up an American resume and have subsequently explored openings online and in the papers.

Places such as Reuters and Bloomberg are good suggestions however to break into an organisation of that calibre I will need a better grounding in the industry.

However, the jist of my message was one of intended networking, the newspaper industry being one so driven by name dropping and mutual acquaintance.

Thanks
