Hi Guys, I'm just going through the process of applying to work as a RMO in NSW. There are a few helpful websites like doctors connect but thought I would put this post up of all the info I have gathered on how to apply to try to make it easier for other people. Please let me know if aby of this is wrong or if anything should be added. The most important thing I would say is start the process early!

Things I Had to Do for Australia

Competent Authority Pathway B on AMC website $600- can take 2-3months
-4 x passport photograph certified
-medical degree certified
-identification certified: birth certificate, international driving licence, medical registration, passport
-foundation year certificate (from medical school)
-original certificate of good standing (from GMC)
-form signed by same person

I was charged £58 to get documents certified but some friends were charge £300- get a quote before you go.

Forms for registration with AHPRA- $1115
-form ALPS-03
-certified proof of ID again, another copy of foundation cert, medical degree, cert of good standing
-rewrite C.V. In specified format
-AMC certificate

Hospital Forms
-statutory declaration signed at same time as certifying documents.
-proof of immunisation- tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis, hep B, 2x MMR, varicella from GP or occupational health
- proof of ID- birth cert, passport, council rates, drivers licence, medical degree, GMC cert, high school results/ letter stating taught in English.

Visa- temporary business long stay (457) $260
-need to wait for employer to nominate you and send a number
-certified copy passport, birth certificate, drivers licence, GMC certificate, medical degree, confirmation taught in English.
-Police check- need to get from ACRO.- £35
proof of address, passport photo- certified by someone who has known you for two years, photocopy of passport.
-Health insurance- Wesleyan do postgrad travel insurance with needlestick injury cover for a year ~£200. I asked about private health insurance and since we are covered by the reciprocal agreement with Medicare we dont need it. Just need to enrol with medicare but need our visa before we can do that.
-will need CXR, medical, bloods at registered facility ~£500
take passport and photocopy, forms from internet (26EH/160EH), GP details, 2 passport photos to medical

Register with an Oz bank
I did it online with commonwealth bank of australia- need to deposit money within 4 weeks can do from this country
I also got a credit card with 0% on purchases for 6months with limit of £5000 just incase.

Medical indemnity- MPS- £65
Book Flights
Book Temp accomodation
?Hire a car
Cancel payments over here, not necessary to be with GMC, sort forwarding address.
Pack up accommodation
Appointments before leaving- nurse for supply of pill, dentist, optician etc.

Hi Dr Sam,

Has your registration been processed by the AHPRA? If so are you able to share how long it took them once they had your forms?

I'm hoping to work at SHO level in Queensland, visa application is lodged, medical is done but visa can't be granted until registration is processed by AHPRA. Hopefully that will be soon :fingerscrossed:

Hi Stu, The registration took approx 4 weeks but mine was a little bit delayed as I was still awaiting my AMC certificate when I lodged my registration application. If you phone them once they have your forms it tends to get done a little bit quicker.

Hi, my wife and I are currently going through the hell that is AMC RACGP registration. Can I ask you a couple of questions Sam.
What did you do about the GMC CGS? From what I can see they no longer issue them directly to the Doctor but send them directly to the AMC.
Also where did you get the Notary Public services? All enquiries I've made have been £90+ per document!

Hi there Zorlac, I just phoned the GMC and they sent a copy of the CGS to the AMC and to AHPRA. You need to ask for it to be sent to both as the australian organisations dont communicate with each other. The GMC have the addresses and it was free when I asked them.

I had my documents certified at a local solicitor's office in Tranent in Scotland (Mackinnon and Forbes). I think it can be hit and miss with the prices. I think smaller firms normally cap how much they charge for the documents, or at least thats the feeling I got when I looked around.

Cheers for the quick reply Sam. It's useful to know I don't need the hard copies of the CGS.
Also, the AMC are asking for "current medical registration", I'd presume the CGS should cover this? And did you send evidence of Secondary education to cover the proficiency in English requirements? I was just thinking of sending an A-level cert or something.

Hi, no worries! I also had a certificate from the GMC to say I was registered- I sent that as well, it was sent out after I paid my GMC registration. I just sent my high school results for my English proficiency and that was adequate.

Dear Dr.Sam,

I sent my application to AHPRA 3 weeks ago and I got a email that they received it 2 weeks ago.But still they haven't charged my credit card and when I called they said it's being assessed.
How long will it take to charge the credit card? and From charging credit card how long it will take to get the registration?
Do they send anything in the middle of the process of AHPRA application procedure?

Hiya, it takes about 6 weeks, they are really slow, I dont think I was charged until it had been fully assessed, and they dont give you any information in the mean time. They are really slow to answer or give you any information when you call them for an up date. Dont worry that is all normal for them, even tho you are paying them more than $1000 for what seems to be a fairly poor service, it should all work out in the end. If you can wait for the 6 weeks to lapse give them a call at the end of that, but if you are in a rush contact them and tell them and try to get your sponsoring hospital to give them a call too.

Hi, yep I applied online, it took 6 weeks for mine to be completed and about 4 weeks for my friends. Since you already have the AHPRA registration sorted it should make it much quicker. Mine was only delayed because of the medical. I had to get a report from a specialist because I had pylonephritis in childhood.




Just an aside for when any of you guys get into Australia, it feels really expensive at first, particularly in Sydney due to the pound being weak, and also Sydney seems to be super expensive so just make sure you have some savings to head over with since it might be 4-6 before you get paid.

When you are searching for accommodation (if not provided by the hospital) you need to be prepared. Its pretty different to the UK. Even if you are renting its open houses so difficult to actually arrange to see a place at a specific time that fits in with work. When you do go I would advise taking an application pack and deposit with you to hand in if you really like the place, they can go pretty quickly. In the pack you should have a reference from your prev landlord or mortgage payment statements, your passport and visa, your letter of offer of employment in oz, 100 points of ID (which is different in oz from the UK) and if possible the completed application form for the relevant estate agent.
