UK University Fees for Ex-Pat Children

Hi,
I expect that this topic has been discussed at great length, but as a new comer please humour me.

My Wife and I are Full British passport holders and as British as you can get. We moved to the Middle East and I work in Dubai for a major airline. My Wife part-time for a UK based airline. Although we own a house in the UK that is presently rented out we are non-resident and non UK Tax payers as of 2007.

We have 3 young children(10, 8, 3yrs) and would one day like to think that they could attend university in the UK if intelligent enough !! Does anyone out there have,in simple terms please, what the rules/requirements are regarding University Fees please ?

Thank You and Kindest Regards.

I remember seeing recently that you would be considered as non-resident after 3 years out of the country, and as such elligible to pay non-nationals fees.

Hello and a big welcome to BE.

Excellent information can be found in the BE Wiki, not forgetting the Living and Moving Abroad forum that will help you, another set of great help is the permanent threads at the TOP of each forum, they are very pertinent to that particular forum and makes sensible reading.

Moderators deal with any problems that arise such as inappropriate posts, spammers etc, you will find their names at the bottom right hand side of each forum's index in bold font.

Please contact me if I can give you any further help.

Welcome to BE :)

Basically, you need to be resident in the EU for 3 years before you start uni to be considered for local rates, other wise you will have to pay international rates.

The cost isn't that much different these days, the real difference is being eligible for student loans via the SLC, if you're resident, you get it by applying through your LEA. They then pay the uni and you repay it back after earning x amount of money after graduation. If you don't qualify, you'll have to pay tuition up front to the uni and get a private loan if you need one and the rates won't be nearly as good.

Some people have been able to get around it by keeping a house in the UK, others haven't. A lot of it comes down to how cash strapped the local LEA might be I think, but it wouldn't be something of a gamble I'd want to rely on.

I have a son who started his degree in the UK, is completing it in the US, and may well want to do postgrad studies back in the UK after being away for three years. We`ve kept our house in the UK all that time, but what difference does that make if he wasnt actually in the UK this past three years. Does anybody know?

Post doc is different...the LEA only ever stumped up for your first degree, so anything else above that is on you, so it doesn't matter on the residence thing.

Speak to the college, they're all different, some might waive costs if you can teach while doing it etc, some might not.
