Default Time to go home

Hi All

After lurking around the board for months and picking up tons of valuable information, I thought it was time to join in!

I came to the USA from the UK over 17 years ago to work for a London company for 6 months. I met my partner and have 'overstayed' for about 16 years as there was, and still is no route to remaining legally. Strangely, I have a SS # and a driving license and have worked as an independent contractor and paid taxes for the entire time I've been here, as well as buying and selling homes.
I have never dared to leave for fear of being refused entry on coming back........that's a lot of missed family occasions (including funerals) in that time, though my mother comes for a month every year and my brother and sister come every two or three years.

Well, we've decided it's time to go home, I can't stand the uncertainty of being without status and unable to travel. My partner is soon to loose his job after 15 years and has no family living, and with that we no longer have good health insurance. Family in the UK are getting older and it's time to do my part to help. All the signs tell us it's the right time.

We were able to have a 'Civil Union' in July last year, which is now registered as a Civil Partnership in England and will be applying for his visa soon.

We're off to Cheltenham/Cotswolds in October and are looking for an 'Inn' in the area to start a new career.

See you around the boards!

to BE.

Do check out our Moving Back To The UK Forum. Lots info in the old threads about benefits/finding somewhere to live...that sort of thing. Also take a look at the BE Wiki. The people who post in the MBTTUK forum are very helpful and supportive...so any questions you may have...ask away.

Good luck.

Thanks Sue and dreadsoc.........I'm finding my way around very well (but then I'd been 'lurking' for months before I joined !)

We are actually doing the settlement visa application tonight....hopefully we'll be in under the old rules!

The basement is cleared out, we accepted a quote for packing and loading the 40' container (using Upakweship for the shipping). Now have to get rid of the grand piano and some other big items.
The car is the most difficult to time as I'm (hopefully) leaving in September with the OH following with the dog 5 weeks later, but it's too long to go without a car or renting one!

Thanks for checking in!
