Default Newbe..moving back to Knysna from UK

Hello All
I have just registered here and would love to get some advice. I have been living in the UK for 13 years now, originally from Germany then lived in South Africa for 18 years, mostly Cape Town and Knysna, a bit of Durban and Joburg initially. Anyway, I feel a very strong pull back home to Knysna where my parents and sisters are still living, and I really would appreciate some advice on shipping things to SA. It will only be boxes of stuff, I'm selling my furniture etc. off as I think it would be too expensive to take everything along, although I know everything is terribly expensive to replace in SA. Can any of you give me any advice on reliable but also reasonable shipping companies?? There are so many out there and I find it really difficult to decide. Personal recommendations are always better. Thank you for reading, would really love to get some help, I only have about 2 weeks left to decide whether to store here or to ship straight away to SA and store my stuff there, would be cheaper...Thanks again
A.

Hi and welcome to BE

There are a couple of shipping companies who have forums on BE - John Masons and Bournes. You may be able to get some help from them. There is also a South African forum - http://britishexpats.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=171 that may be able to offer advice.

Personally shipping UK to Adelaide, I used John Masons with no issues, but couldn't tell you about shipping to Africa

If you click on the company name it's a link so will take you to their forum on BE

Or you can click on 'forum index' in the top left and then scroll down until you see them

Thank you Alfresco.....Knysna is truly beautiful, I do however keep wondering why I even want to go back....then at other times (this happens throughout the day, nearly every day) I'm 100% sure that this is the right decision, then I doubt it again. I suppose this is normal after having lived in the UK for 13 years. My mind finds excellent reasons for going 'home' but it is just as talented at finding brilliant reasons for staying here!! .....all shall be the way it has to be

Have you been back recently for a visit? Things may have changed in 13 years... What will you do for work etc... the crime factor. All those things.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but I would be thinking along those lines, for sure.

Welcome to BE

As a former SA resident I understand the "pull" back to SA that you are feeling. I live in Australia now but for the nearly 20 years that I lived in the UK, I constantly felt the urge to return to South Africa but didn't do so because I was afraid it would represent a backward step for my family. Eventually we moved to Australia instead and apart from holidays, the urge to go back has gone.

What were your original reasons for moving to the UK? And do you think you would be able to adapt again to the high crime rates and the huge uncertainties of life in SA?
