Default Mom needing opinions

Hello everyone,

I found this site by chance and although I am not British or living abroad, I thought I might ask for opinions from you all regarding your country and our son's desire to study abroad. He is very interested in spending a semester (he would rather go longer, but this is what his major requires) in the UK. He has kind of narrowed it down (for the time being anyway!) to the University of Sheffield or Writtle College in Chelmsford. He is in the landscape architecture field of study. Which of those areas do you feel would be suited for a person a. who has never traveled abroad, b. is going to need to be very cost-conscious, and c. who really wants to become immersed in new country. From what he has told me both schools have his major of study, but we do not know how strong either is compared to the other. It will be up to his advisor and school to approve them.

Anyway, as a parent who will be funding the majority of this , I wanted to get opinions from any of you who are familiar with those areas of your country or those schools. Thank you in advance for any help you could give.

Welcome to the forum.

It all depends on what you are looking for I guess. Writtle is of course much closer to London and all that offers but will be more expensive than Sheffield.

Having looked (very quickly) at both sites they offer widely differing courses and perspectives I think.

Always worth emailing the colleges direct - they normally are pretty good at replying.

Sheffield is an old full blown University in the UK. Writtle is an Agriculture / Horticultural college attached to the University of Essex.

i know zip about his field of study but 2 things stick out for me.

I have heard of the Uni of Sheffield and hopefully so will other employers etc. I have never heard of the other one.

Sheffield is more north of Chelmsford and probably a lot cheaper to live in. Its also a 'city' as opposed to a 'town' so more options for accomodation/entertainment/facilities. It is further from London though if thats a consideration.
