Long Term (2nd Gen) Brit Expat Looking to settle down somewhere
Hello to one and all,
My parents were seasoned Brit expats and I followed in their footsteps soon after finishing University in the UK and, after nearly 30 years (of mostly tax free expat status), I am ready to settle down somewhere warm, sunny & safe together with my Goan wife. Our plan is to buy or start a business in wherever the final destination may be using the capital we have amassed over the years and have something to both live off, grow and leave to the next generation.
Spain/France/Portugal were the initial plan but I have read so many bad things and I don't speak any of those languages well enough to deal with bureaucracy. The Far East was another consideration but I don't like the idea of not being allowed to own (freehold) land/property/business and have no faith in using 3rd party local fronts to get around such restrictions.
My search continues as my timeline is currently not fixed but any and all comments, links, advice etc. are gratefully received.
Cheers
Laith

Hello there and welcome to the forum
You can own property freehold in Malaysia though not sure what kind of work visa you would apply for. But, if interested , pop over to the Malaysia section of the forum, and I'll see you over there .
What springs out from your post is that you have a Goan wife and therefore I think that would smooth the way if you moved to Goa. I have friends, the guy is of Indian descent and they have property in Goa. The spouse is Dutch but apparently rules have recently changed and she is now deemed to be permanent resident and all that goes with it. She is over the moon. So another possibility .
Singapore is very open to entrepreneurs. Another thought .
Anyway....happy planning.

Hi Bakedbean and thanks for both the warm welcome and the feedback. I do like Malaysia but you're right about the visa thing. Certainly warrants more investigation and several visits to that part of the forum (as well as agencies etc.). Singapore is too rigid for my taste (a smoker who also chews a lot of gum) but otherwise a beautiful place to visit. My wife (and therefore me too) has no wish, desire or intention in settling in Goa or anywhere else in India for that matter so that's a total non-starter I'm afraid.
Cheers again and see you around.
