I notice you've already found BE's European forum.
I spent a couple of weeks in Crete about 20 years ago...no doubt it's changed a lot since then.

Some parts have changed more than others, I guess.
My memories of Crete 25 years ago are of the far eastern end of the island. I live right down in the south west corner and I didn't come to this part until about 13 or 14 years ago.
The roads have certainly improved dramatically but whole swathes of the north coast have become a bit OTT touristy.
