Default Hello from Quebec

I'm starting here as I'm new to this forum. I left England in the 80s and came to Canada via a long stay in France.

I'm not sure if I should post it here but I have a question... I will be returning to the UK shortly for an period of 7 weeks and have decided to buy a car as rental would be too expensive for such a period. Has any member tried to do this? I'm having trouble getting UK insurance without a UK drivers license.

Hello and welcome to BE.

You will have problems getting car insurance if you are not a UK resident. I have a UK driving license but found it extremely difficult to get insurance as I was not a UK resident. Non UK resident...together with no UK DL...

Surely it's best to rent a car. If you buy a car...you have insurance to pay for and any repairs that may or not be necessary. Then you have to sell it when you leave...unless you're hoping to buy a bone shaker that's worthless.

Thanks for the welcome and the reply!

I do have one of those old green licenses and have asked the DVLA if I can use that one (it still has a valid date) and I'm expecting them to reply sometime before Christmas!

The British High Commission in Ottawa had lots of info on their page and said how "easy" it is to drive in the UK. But they didn't mention insurance. I tried calling them but they didn't answer the phone.

I've rented a car in the past but it is very expensive for 7 weeks. Not only that but I need an adapted ar with hand controls which complicates things further.

So basically I'm up a gum tree .

There are insurance companies that accept non-UK licenses but only EU, AU and NZ. What about the other dominion Canada?

As far as insurance is concerned...I think your main problem is not being a UK resident.
