Default Hello from BC Canada

Just became an expat, (still feels kinda weird saying that.. better than immigrant for some reason tho lol) am currently in BC Canada, surfed onto here the other day whilst looking for what to do with my medical forms etc. All is well in that dept now but I did enjoy some of the discussions so here I be.

Quinch = webby type, made in manchester.

Hello Quinch,

I've been an expat for 40 years on the 28th of May last, and that's on my second go over in Canada ... I first came over to relatives as a minor. Funny, unto this very day I never think of myself as an immigrant, rather as an emigrant ... makes me feel some how more connected to back home that way.

I see good ol' Jerseygirl has you all kitted out for helpful links and useful information on the site, and so I'll simply bid you welcome and greetings from Ontario! (Don't half envy you with the mild weather of BC ... meant to be much like back in England, whereas these parts certainly live up to their reputation for brutally cold winters!)

Best,
Christian

Hey Quinch,

Don't worry, you don't have to explain it, not to me. There are a number of strong feelings attached to the whole of it ... I didn't take citizenship until two years ago, and only then because at the time, I was hoping to retire back home, and this way if it didn't work out, I could come over to Canada again. I think it's difficult for those who haven't emigrated to put themselves in our shoes. The word 'immigrant' —whilst not offensive per se— has a less than pleasant ring to it, tacitly saying 'You don't quite belong'. Add to that: how many of them would not be of very mixed emotions —to say the least— if taking citizenship of another country ... and some countries make one renounce all other citizenships in order to do so. 'Nough said on that score.

I think the locals often find it comical to see us try to get through our first winter here ... . Granted, it becomes easier after that, but the first is something for which words cannot prepare one! When I was a youth, sent out to eastern Québec on the New England (misnomer ) border, I quickly learnt that at -40 degrees —the point where Fahrenheit and Celsius are equal— that one doesn't give a toss for thermometers, not when one's lips are too cold to even pronounce the word. Oh, and don't let them try to tell you to touch your tongue to anything metal, like a flag pole ... you'll be there until the spring thaw, which comes around the 24th of May in these parts! <—(my still swollen tongue!)

Once again, I don't half envy you that B.C. weather! If one should actually want snow, you've the mountains. Maybe I'll retire there instead of back home, eh.

Best,
Christian

Welcome to BE ... and BC, Quinch!

Yo guys, thanks for dropping in

Oh I hear ya, on Canada day a couple were interviewed in the morning whilst snowboarding somewhere here (Oggy) on Vancouver Island, they said they were going to do that till lunch then head over to Tofino to surf the afternoon away... Yummy.

Cold+Tongues+Metal = Bad. I actually learned this at age 7, upside down in the corner shops chest freezer not one of my finest moments.
